Someone special asked me, “Rashidat, what lessons have I learned while here in Thailand?” Today marks 25 days. 🇹🇭😎 I'm just going to start doing things a little different, Take a slightly different approach about some things. I am different. My love is different, My lense is different, My forgiveness, fear, passion, and desires are different. I am aware that my beliefs and lifestyle is different. Every Moment is an Experience

An experience by definition is novel and unpredictable, which when you think about it means that all of life can be broken up into individual moments or experiences.

Every minute of every day is completely new. We have never lived that exact moment before in that exact way. We can never guess, for better or worse, what the next minute will bring. We could get hit by a car crossing the street. We could win the lottery. Life is one experience after another.

I had never thought of my experience experiment in this way. I had been thinking about all the ways I could live experientially: upgrading my every day life into one that was more memorable and more passionate than my current one. One that I would look back on with pride and admiration. I wanted this experience experiment to make me a newer, shinier, better version of myself. I wanted to attend that Morrissey concert I never would have gone to and connect with my friends over a dinner I never would have cooked.

Then I had coffee with a friend this week and she brought up my blog in the context of raising her 13-year old daughter: Instead of getting upset or shifting into her usual I'm-the-Mom pattern, she decided to try looking at each moment of her relationship with her daughter as an experience. When they were having a challenging conversation recently she surprised herself by saying, "I've never had this experience before. I've never been the mother of a 13-year old daughter." Instead of trying to act like the all-knowing mother, she turned the situation into something they were both experiencing together. Her daughter understood the moment for what it was: "We're in this together. Neither of us knows what we are doing."

That conversation in the coffee shop was a true experience for me and one that shows the power of connection. I never would have guessed that through my experience experiment I would be bonding with a new friend about how this blog helped her in thinking about her relationship with her daughter.

I never would have thought that my attempt at pushing myself to be the best me would actually become more about how to really experience each individual moment in all of its monotonous beauty. Yes, some moments are mind-blowing new experiences (like my hot yoga class yesterday at Prana Power Yoga with Nina). But others are totally normal experiences, like getting coffee with a friend, which turn into something mind-blowing because of the powerful connection and conversation created.

So the next time you are having an experience that feels negative-- it's dreary and cold, the train is taking forever to show up, your friend/partner/daughter/mother isn't understanding you--just remember that your next experience is just a moment away and you have the power to make that one a positive one.
