Mljet is a two-hour ferry ride from Prapratno Port, just past Ston. The ferry allows cars to be transported as well, which was a great relief, and made traveling around Croatia much easier since the country has several beautiful islands one can visit. We reserved an Airbnb in the town closest to the ferry port, Sobra. Our host came down and find us because he knew it would have been difficult for us to find his home, which sits on the steep mountain, on our own. The road to his house was under construction on the time so when he found us trying to drive up the mountain he got into the car and directed us to his house. He was just one example of how hospitable Croatians are.
The northern part of Mljet island is the main National Park area. The small town of Polace is the “bigger and more happening” town of the whole island, even though it’s mostly made up of a small main road that runs along the water. The National Park has hikes/walks people can take. We ended up taking a boat ride to the Benedict Monastery that sits on St. Mary’s Island and continues on to the Turquoise Lakes–better known as Small and Large Lakes. We took a long walk around the large lake, which offered different perspectives and feel of the area. As we got further from the main entrance and the tourists it started to feel more like a remote location where we could hear the snakes and other animals go by unseen in the bushes.
The southern part of the Island is less visited, but has great beaches, which is where we stopped to get some sun before heading back to the mainland.
