Everyone comes to Everest with a dream: trekkers want base camp, mountaineers seek the summit, pilgrims strive for enlightenment, and others need to find themselves. Not me. I was only going for a walk. Or so I thought. We enter a shady pine forest, flanked by cool straight trees. Suddenly, the path evens out near a clearing, and Pratap raises his hand, signalling us to stop. People hold cameras and stand around talking. A man hands rupee to an old Nepalese woman at a stall. After careful choosing limes from her tray, he crouches and slides them into his pack. It had to happen. Knew it would. Sometimes remarkable things happen when you least expect them. No fanfare. No sign nailed to a tree that says "Defining Moment Ahead". She is simply there, and simply unmistakable. Framed by enormous pines, a giant - like the subject of an oil painting - sits patiently against vivid blue sky. I stand transfixed. It's Mount Everest. Bonnie stands beside me, and Pratap moves in.
