❝ No, where I’m from is pretty different from these parts, Doctor, ❞ Valentine says thoughtfully, lightly touching his steely fingertips to the table by his hip, ❝ More settlements, more standing buildings, different structures an’ culture. A lot of th’ same problems, though. Raiders, especially. ❞
He feels for the folks in the Capital, having to deal with the bigger, more organized mutants & the thriving slave trade, especially northward ( & bordering on an even more active trade in its neighboring commonwealth ). The settlements may be fewer, but they’re fashioned more like cities in repurposed steel, like Diamond City back home. He can see why they developed that way, it’s a smart move to make them more defensible in this environment. Seems like there are fewer remaining roads & fewer functional trade routes between the settlements, too.
❝ There aren’t others like me there, though. Y’might say I was a test run of a model that never quite made th’ market. ❞

✦ DR. HAMMOND :
“I believe it. You took quite a beating,” James replied before injecting him with Med-X. It was twice the dose he would normally use, but chems tended not to work as well for ghouls. “This should help. Does this happen often?”
❝ Kind of . . . I don’t know ? ❞ the patient was wishy — washy, unsure how to answer the question. He could get in trouble if he said too much. He might be in trouble if he didn’t say enough. It was hardly the first time Moriarty had put his hands on the flighty ghoul, but this was a beast of a different colour. Gob was in bad shape, & here the doctor had agreed it was so.
The Med — X soothed the pain, but it did nothing to ease his fears.

"You shouldn’t push yourself so hard."
“You’re not my father, James...”
Betty ignored him, more or less. This was West situation to deal with and Betty mostly attempting to stay out of their way. He was still going through ancient holotapes, citing his business was his own whenever inquiring of his project’s nature. West was good enough to leave him be.

“Maybe not, but aren’t there things you would have been happier not knowing?” James finished copying some of his notes into his terminal before looking up at Violet. “That’s the curse of curiosity, I’m afraid. We just have to hope what we find out ends up being worth it.”
“No, I wouldn’t be happier not knowing. I would have understood, maybe been able to help sooner. Not knowing caused so much more pain.”
Tears threatened to spill out of her eyes -- more from sadness or anger, she didn’t know.
She felt betrayed after everything that happened, could hardly stand to look at the man she called a dad, “You and Jonas were the only family I had. Now, one of you is dead and the other--I just don’t fucking know who he is anymore.”

“That looks inflamed. I’d leave it be, if I were you.” Dead Sea idly commented as the other scratched away at the red raw flesh. “Poking and prodding never does any kind of injury any good, you know.”

“Heyy, you got a pip-boy too,” Cottonbelle noticed the bulking computer on the man’s arm the first time she saw him. “You must be from around one of the vaults here? Vault 81, right?”
