              “ and we need not forget that. but this duty is not one i know how to avoid. ” before, life had been rather easy. all that had stood between himself and what he wanted were eight people, all of whom had died five years ago. since, life had not been any harder. the earl of high hurst had lived in ignorant, blissful luxury, happily trapped in aristocracy. monty had never expected complications. he’d never expected to be ripped from the dreamlike situation he’d made for himself, albeit quite immorally.

              reality had tumbled into his life a month ago, in a rather ordinary way. he’d received a letter in the mail from the british military. they required servicemen, they said. ( soldiers, monty had read. ) there would be consequences to those who failed to report. that was all. monty had found it absolutely remarkable that such a short letter could change so much. yes, of course, monty had replied with a promise to report. all of it had been so emotionless, so logical. to fail to report was the risk examination. examination may lead to the discovery of his crimes. monty enjoyed importance and positive attention. to be found out now, five years after being found innocent, would destroy his reputation.

              to be perfectly honest, monty had failed to consider his wife and his mistress in making such a decision. selfish, he had thought retrospectively, and in the weeks that had followed, in which he had told no one of what he’d done, he’d wondered if he regretted his actions. it was quite likely he would, if he didn’t already. the conditions of the war were not widely known, though they couldn’t possibly good. a war of the entire world. who would ever have thought it possible!

              ( more urgently: who would have ever thought that there was a force in the world capable of taking him from his sibella. )

               “ i will return in a year or so, i would expect, and all will be back to normal. and i will write, of course. it will be as though i have never even left. my dearest sibella, this changes nothing. ” monty spoke with such rigor, as though somehow he might convince himself of his own lies. of course he wanted to believe such a thing, monty didn’t want this to change, he didn’t want to lose sibella. what would a year of separation do them? he dared not imagine the consequences.

               “ are you expecting someone of greater importance than myself? ” a brow raised slightly as monty closed the door behind him with great care. his gaze drew to her immediately: he would never tire of looking at her, of taking in her extraordinary beauty, the very thing which first had caught his attention when monty had initially encountered sibella. and since then, she had only ever become more intriguing to him. monty liked to imagine that he understood sibella as much as she was entirely a mystery to him.

              but it was not her beauty that monty had come for today. the matter was more sensitive, and he did dearly hope that she would not outright reject him. monty was the ninth earl of high hurst, after all! though her words nagged his thoughts relentlessly: someone more important? who could be more important? such illusions of grandeur monty had: to be important to people was just as satisfying as being rich, and he’d imagined, perhaps rather with a narcissistic mind, that there was no one in her life as important as he was. after all, sibella was the most important person to monty, excluding phoebe of course.

              speaking of his wife, monty produced a letter from his inner pocket, written delicately in her hand. “ i’ve a matter of some importance about which i’d like to speak with you. or should i say, i’ve an invitation to discuss. my wife and i should like to invite you to high hurst for supper. if, of course, you can bear to pull yourself away from you more important company —- ”

My Opinion on;

Character in general: oh, sibella. i’ve come to love her more and more as i’ve watched the musical over and listened to the cast recording. she’s such a beautifully complex character, who is a lot of fun to watch and really adorable in so many ways. heart eyes @ sibella, always <3<3How they play them: wONDERFULLY honestly their sibella is so great, and i am always so excited to see they’ve replied to one of our many shippy/fun/angsty threads. honestly just. all the monty and sibella things, all the time. i Love.The Mun: kourt is bae, and talking plot with them or ships with them is always allll the feels
