Steve knew that he has been going into his presentation heat, he fucking knew it alright. Steve was no fool, male omegas are rare, there's not much clinical research on their anatomy, and being one he had to be prepared, he had to know beforehand what was supposed to be happening to him and if anything went wrong. He's been having cramps in lower abdomen for days now and his neutral puppy scent slowly shifted towards something more defined, stronger and fresher. Steve even called a gyno to make an appointment for after his heat to make sure everything went well (participating in various sports, one has to be aware of own health, okay?). He just wished it waited one more day, it was already Friday goddammit!
Well. Fuck him and his expectations it seems, because here he is, in omega's bathroom sticking a pad he had asked for from some nice cheerful freshman (was her name Christy? Chrissy?), and wishing for stronger scent patches that he (like an idiot!) left on the nightstand and by force of habit took his puppy ones. It will be at least a couple more hours until he gets completely delirious but the pain is already hard to ignore and his skin is burning. It's burning and he's all clammy with cold sweat and because of that Steve is now also cold and his underwear is wet and he's stinking up the bathroom and God he wishes he was in his nest, warm and protected, not uncomfortable and ashamed in the public space.
Stop it! It's fine. It's gonna be fine. He just needs to get to the nurse. Yeah. Yeah, he's getting there, he's getting some patches, painkillers and then he fucks away from the last two classes to the warmth of his nest. Okay, it's good enough.
After the bell, when tha halls are empty and no one could point out Steve's condition, he finally finds his way to the nurse's office only to find out-
"Yeah, she's not here, sorry."
Aaaaaaannd fuck him again.
"Well, where is she?"
The boy who was lounging lazily on the nurse's chair shrugged shoulders indifferently: "Principal's office. Why are you here anyway, coming down with something? You look feverish." He stood up and came closer to Steve.
It was no surprise he couldn't tell by the scent what was happening, since his nose was plugged with cotton, and Steve for the first time today thanked his luck. The boy (Steve saw him regularly but couldn't quite remember his name) was an alpha, and a notable one. His head of wild curles could be seen from any place at the canteen, since he had a habit of stepping on the lunch tables every once in a while and had an inclination to wearing a lot of jewelry, which is why he often could be heard before seen, even if he wasn't talking(which he also loved doing loudly).
"Th-that's right uh, um what happened to your um?..." Steve pointed at his face.
"Oh, you should see the other guy. The other guy being fucking canteen door where some fucking meatheds just push the heavy fucker like there's no one around!" He was practically yelling at the and of his passionate speech, Steve couldn't help the snort that escaped him.
"Yeah, I had my share of bruises from that doors as well, it really doesn't help that they open both ways," Steve frowned "though some... people do it on purpose." He tried not to think that Tommy could hurt someone just like the boy in front of him by doing so. He shook his head and offered a hand "I'm Steve by the way."
The curly boy laughed and his shoulders length hair jumped with his whole body while he was shaking with the force of his bright laugh. Steve never saw someone laugh so openly, with their whole body. "I know who you are, popular boy," he took the offered hand in his, warm and steady, " Eddie Munson, fancy meeting ya."
"So, Eddie, do you know where the nurse is? I kinda really need some medication here" Steve's vision was starting to blur and feverish condition only worsened by each passing minute.
"Shit, you really do, your skin's to hot to touch, here, sit" Eddie grasped his shoulders and led him to the bed "she uh, she must be at the Principal's office, she was really pissed about the damn canteen doors, but maybe I can find some febrifuge yeah?"
"Painkillers" Steve managed to mumble, he was missing Eddie's warm sure hands on his shoulders, he also wondered about his scent, if it was secure and trustworthy like his hands and his smile or soft and gentle like his face and his eyes. Steve's vision tunneled to Ediie hustling near some drawers, he repeated "I need painkillers, not fever medicine."
"What? But you're practically burning, and your face is super red?"
Steve lowered his gaze, surprised that he still somehow felt shy despite all the overwhelming presentation sensations "and scent patches. Strong ones, like so strong they can cover one's... heat?"
"Oh? Ooooh! Yeah, yep, I can- I can find that!" Eddie's cheeks ears and tip of the nose blossomed with beautiful pink as he started rummaging through the drawers with redoubled energy "You uh- erm, do you need maybe.. fuck, nevermind"
"You know, for someone reproaching puritan society you acting quite awkward regarding simple human biology. What was it?"
Eddie finally approached him with the needed items "Oh, Hawkins High's prince was paying attention to my active civic position? I'm honored, really. But I'm just trying to be delicate here, don't want you to think I'm imposing or something, but I wanted to ask do you have someone to drive you home?"
Steve waved it of lazily "I was just gonna drive like really slowly, it's fine"
Discontented, Eddie clicked his tongue "That won't do it, there's no way you're driving, let me call your parents, or maybe friends?"
Steve didn't want to admit to someone he barely knew, that the only close to him people who really cared, were his grandparents whom he hasn't seen in long time, since they lived across the ocean, so he didn't find a response better than "If you're so concerned why don't you give me a ride?"
"Why it would be my pleasure, let me just- I think it stopped bleeding" Eddie made an attempt at pulling the cotton out of his nose but then abruptly stopped, "although you maybe should change your patches first? I don't think I'll be able to smell anything right now, but uh- I don't think we want an unbidden-boner-scare?"
Okay, he really wasn't shy, which amused Steve, still, he rushed to change the patches, swallowed the painkillers. Whe they finally kicked and he felt better, he realized he was already sitting in a rattly van smelling of alpha(Eddie), it wasn't overwhelming but rather gently enveloping, mixing with weed, some greasy fast food and residual scents of few other people, must be his usual group of friends whom Steve always saw Eddie at the canteen with. The ride was mostly quiet, Steve gave directions with his head resting against the window and Eddie softly humming some tune.
When they arrived Steve was positively nodding off his organism needeng al the rest before the heat properly started. He felt light touch to his forearm.
"Steve? Were here."
Steve felt bittersweet, there were very few people willing to take care of him unconditionally, it was surprising to find that person in a person he knew of, but didn't know him. "Thank you Eddie, really, I realize I wouldn't be able to drive by myself, you helped me though you didn't have to, I- I appreciate it."
"Hey, Steve, it's nothing. Any decent person would do that." They really wouldn't. Steve glanced in his direction one last time, opened the passenger door and made his way to house without looking back. He didn't see how Eddie's gaze lingered on the closed door and his light smile.
He did see the old van Tuesday morning in his driveway though, when his heat broke.
"I assume you don't have a ride since your car is still on the school parking lot? Jump in, your chariot awaits."
Well, maybe he was lucky after all.
Steve: When life gives you lemons, you…
Dustin: Throw them at people!
Steve: No.
Dustin: Squirt the juice in their eyes?
Steve: No!
Dustin: Ahh. Make lemonade…
Steve: Exac-
Dustin: That tastes really sour!
Steve: You’ve been hanging out with Eddie too long.
Eddie: Maybe if you’d occupy my time, I wouldn’t have any left to teach the youths.
Steve: Keep dreaming.
Eddie: I already do, big boy. I already do.
Dustin: I got a lemon!
Steve: Hey! Put that down! Don’t you dare throw that at me!!!
Eddie: So… I take it that asking you out on a date is out of the question now?
Steve: Ugh. Pick me up on Friday at 7.

stray piece
ao3 Written for @steddiemicrofic March 2026 prompt, “short,” 321 words. Rated G, Missing Scene, season 5, epilogue, after Dustin’s speech, canonical character death
The memory hits him sometime during the confetti-laden joy after Dustin’s graduation speech, like maybe the cheers, the background hum of the speakers have knocked it loose; Steve’s back in the school office, and he can’t remember the specifics of why he’s there, a sick note, a rare instruction from his parents, he wishes he could pin it down. He turns, and Eddie Munson’s being chewed out by Principal Higgins in the hallway. His face is a parody of seriousness, nodding gravely at every word Higgins says, and Steve finds himself having to hide a smile, ducking behind the open door.
“Are you finding this amusing, Munson?”
“No, sir,” Eddie says, and maybe Steve’s kidding himself, but he thinks he can hear the trace of something in the words, another hidden smile. That maybe Eddie’s seen him.
He doesn’t ask; he never gets to ask.
Dustin’s blinking like it’s just the sun in his eyes. Steve knows better.
“You think he would’ve liked it?” Dustin asks. He smiles like it’s the only thing keeping him from crying.
(“You better have a speech planned,” Steve tells Eddie. He’s in The Upside Down, mid-walk through the woods. “You’ve had plenty of time to write one.” It already feels easy to joke together, like he’s learning a rhythm he’s secretly known all along.
“Oh, absolutely,” Eddie says, theatrical tap at the side of his head. “Got it all up here.”
“You’re so full of shit.”)
“Steve?” Dustin says, suddenly vulnerable, uncertain.
“Yeah,” Steve says instantly. He ruffles Dustin’s hair, holds him tight. “Yeah, bud, he’d—”
A welling emotion cuts short all he might’ve said. He figures from the way Dustin hugs him back that the kid might get it, just a little. Maybe Steve will explain it to him. He’ll find the words.
When Dustin lets go he allows Steve the illusion of pretending that there’s a stray piece of confetti in his eyes.
what if Eddie didn't direct Steve's attention to the supposed "unambiguous sign of true love" with Nancy in the Upside Down and instead took the conversation in a different direction?
"The only reason I came in here was ’cause those ladies came in straight after you," Eddie says, and it feel like this is the most honest he's ever been. "Now, I was too ashamed to be the one who stayed behind - but Wheeler right there, she didn’t waste a second. Not one second. She just dove right in."
Harrington's still looking at him like he wants to protest, all scowly and determined. It's cute. Defending Eddie's honour to Eddie himself in the middle of a hellscape. Steve Harrington, surprise paladin.
He keeps talking, because if he stops now he's pretty sure he'll scream. "Now, I don’t know what happened between you two," he says, "but if I were you -"
Eddie doesn't know what does it. Harrington's expression changes, maybe, or his shoulders stiffen, or something. He can't pinpoint it in the whirl of his thoughts and maybe he's just imagining things, but the words stall on his tongue. "- I would get her back," he was going to say. "As unambiguous a sign of true love as these cynical eyes have ever seen," he was going to say.
Except something about Harrington shifts and something in Eddie responds, and "- if I were you, I'd thank her for having my back," his mouth says almost without his permission, "'Cause that's true friendship, Harrington - real Fellowship sort of stuff."
"Steve," Harrington says, after a moment.
"Huh?"
"Call me Steve," he says. "You're part of this, uh, fellowship too, right?"
Eddie shrugs, can't help smiling a little at Steve's willingness to play along. "Always thought of myself as something of an Aragorn," he says, modestly.
Steve's brow furrows with confusion. "What's an Aragon?"
...and then the earthquake interrupts them the end :P
(much, much later, Eddie gets to explain what an Aragorn is, and Steve argues that no, he's the Aragorn, he was even called king! Eddie lets him have it because he's not quite ready to admit he's mentally cast Steve as Arwen)
Tiger's Paw
@steddielovemonth prompt: camera | G | wc 490 | pre-steddie |
I hope this was a good idea, Steve was thinking while flipping through the stack of pictures he'd just picked up from Melvald's.
He'd set two disposable cameras loose in the halls of Hawkins High in hopes that his classmates could help him memorialize his senior year in a candid way as the school geared up for homecoming. He flips through students, teachers, banners, and rooms until about twenty pictures in, he comes across one of Cindy Mathers posing with the other cheerleaders. The next shows their Tiger mascot attempting to join in, but he's frozen on the paper, forever stuck seemingly tripping into the frame with his pants around his knees. Half of the cheerleaders smile unaware at the camera while the other half look various shades of panicked, trying to either keep the mascot upright, or avoid falling over or getting run into. The flash is harsh and washes out their skin and makes their eyes red. The next picture shows the assumed culprit: a pale smear of a maniacal grin attached to a blurred body trying to escape the reaching swipe of a plush tiger's paw. The fleeing guy has a denim vest, a cloud of dark hair that blends in with the dark background because of the flash, and a bandana flying from its anchor point in the guy's back pocket, all smeared in motion across the glossy paper in Steve's hand.
Steve snorts at the chaos and keeps going.
He flips past a picture of Mr. Denis desperately pointing to his signature "IT'S SIMPLE" scrawled on the chalkboard with an algebra equation dripping to a solution under it. Despite Mr. Denis' insistence, two hands are raised. The next round of pictures show a winning scoreboard, Coach Pram tossing practice basketballs back into their cage, a busy hallway, and play practice. And then Steve gets to one that makes him bark a surprised laugh.
The tiger mascot hangs limp from a coat rack in the drama room, its left paw carefully pulled over to put the limp suit on display by a very serious-looking, once again denim-vest-clad Eddie Munson, who's also clutching a prop longbow as if he had "slain the beast!", Steve can practically hear him dramatically declare. The next one has a slightly blurry Eddie breaking composure, buckling and beaming with laughter. Steve can't help but grin down at the picture, opting not to think about why looks so long at it. He's sure to pull out and put the series of pictures together later.
And if Eddie snoops during a Harrington house party and finds the pictures on a picture board in Steve's room later on, he only picks at Steve about it a little bit until Steve playfully pushes his taunting face away, both of their insides warm with a little booze and something awfully close to butterflies.
thinking about an au where eddie never got involved in the upside down because he graduated on the second try and left town to chase his dreams. he's still hoping for corroded coffin to make it big once the rest of the band graduates but he's not sitting around waiting for that - in the meantime he manages to get a gig temporarily replacing a band's injured guitarist on tour and - is it too unrealistic to say they open for metallica or judas priest once or something? idc Eddie deserves it for dying a gruesome canon death
meanwhile the kids idolize him just by proxy because he founded Hellfire and the rest of the band both brags about him touring and sings his praises as a dm. Steve is NOT jealous of eddie the freak munson, what are you TALKING ABOUT Robin, the guy isn't even HERE.
season four and five still happen more or less the same; after the epilogue when the Former Teens meet up at Robin's uncle's house Jonathan complains about still searching for the perfect actor for his next slasher/horror/societal commentary; it's partially because of a lack of funds but mostly because he has Very Specific Ideas. very steve-shaped ideas. Neither he nor steve realize that of course. so Nancy and Robin make eye contact and go "so... crazy idea. what about... Steve?" and before Steve can go "what the fuck you can't just volunteer me to work for John for free" Jonathan goes "uh no offense but my script requires a level of nuance i just don't think Steve can pull off. Does he even have any acting experience?" so now Steve HAS to do it. Obviously. To prove him wrong.
Robin: "Does he have acting experience?? he was in half the clubs at Hawkins High and won prom king twice. Do you know how much acting goes into being popular? i'd be scared of him if i wasn't bonded to him for life"
So Steve stars in Jonathan's first slasher and it does... surprisingly well in the right circles. Jonathan was suprised how easy it was to work with Steve. Steve surprised himself by enjoying it. They do it again.
At some point - this is a few years later! I assume Corroded Coffin is back together, they've probably recorded an album by now - Eddie stumbles upon a report about one of their movies in a small magazine. Just one page. There's an interview portion with Jonathan, there are images from the movie, there's a small interview with Steve and a nice picture of him eye fucking the camera.
And then he keeps seeing them. Watches the movies. Reads every article he can get his hands on. And even though he is basically living the dream, Eddie stews in anger at the former King of Hawkins High acting all cool and macho and looking hot covered in blood and dirt and talking about feeling "at home" in that costume because that's how he remembers his teenage years anyway, being all charming, and overall HAUNTING Eddie's favorite movie genre.
