PREC 614.001 Toy Camera Photography (Holga Photography) Description: This B/W Photography Preceptorial utilizes a popular toy camera – the Holga. The first session overs basic camera operations, a slide show highlighting contemporary photography followed by a shooting field trip somewhere in Center City. Cameras will be supplied. The second session includes film processing followed by an introduction to the darkroom which will allow students to experience analog photographic practice. Each student will leave with film, contact sheets and several enlargements. PREC 706.001, 002, Mad Potter's Wheel Description: Interested in playing with clay? Join us as we go through the basics of pottery and learn about the art of throwing vases, bowls, and cups! This preceptorial will teach you how to craft a beautiful bowl from scratch. Professors from the Department of Fine Arts will guide us through the steps of clay wheel throwing from preparing the clay to shaping. Come discover the artist within you or just have fun with the spinning clay! PREC 901.001 Urban Art: Mural in Philadelphia Description: Philadelphia is often referred to as the mural capital of the world. In this preceptorial, we will explore what exactly this means and the impact it has on the city. This will be achieved through the infusion of background information on murals with hands-on application. First, we will discuss some details as to what goes into a mural and why they're so popular with particular focus on the city of Philadelphia. Then we will embark on a tour of murals around Philadelphia to learn more about the stories behind the unique murals in the city! PREC 903.001 The Crossings of Photography and Fashion Description: This preceptorial is designed for students who are interested in learning how contemporary fashion photographsare produced. The class will explore the history of the fashion photography and modern constructs that define the importance of branding, marketing, advertising and the relationship of fashion photography in contemporary art and culture today. This preceptorial also includes a field trip to Staley-Wise gallery in New York, which was established in 1981 and opened with an exhibition of Horst photographs and continues to show the work of masters of fashion photography. Thank you. PREC 904.001 Exploring Art in NYC Description: This preceptorial offers you the chance to tour the galleries of the Chelsea district in New York City. We will spend approximately four hours together visiting several exhibitions in the districts most critically acclaimed art spaces. Throughout the day, we will review and discuss the works that we see together. Preceptorial Leader: Jamie Diamond, Professor in Fine Arts Department Preceptorial Organizer: Tianyu Guan Date and Time: TBD Fall preceptorials are numbered from PREC 600s to 900s.. While a preceptorial might appear on PennInTouch to be meeting weekly, students will be informed of the specific date of the preceptorial after registration, at which time they will be able to confirm enrollment or cancel their registration. Most preceptorials will only meet once.

Registration and Enrollment: More students can register on Penn InTouch than the number of spaces available. Enrollment will be determined by lottery, and all students registered for a preceptorial through Penn InTouch will be informed of their enrollment in the preceptorial or placement on the waitlist by the preceptorial organizer.

Dates and Times: We are making every effort to confirm the dates and times. However, it is not always possible to do so before the Course Selection Period ends because many of the professors' schedules are still pending. Thank you for your understanding.

Graduate Students: Preceptorials are intended for undergraduates, and registration on Penn InTouch is restricted to undergraduates. If you are a graduate student who would like to register, please e-mail the preceptorial organizer, and you will be enrolled if space remains after all undergraduate registrations have been processed.

For registration, the course ID for preceptorials is PREC followed by the preceptorial number.
