I’m starting streaming KH this Friday at 8pm (as always, my time zone is EST or GMT -5:00)!

I’m honestly super excited to restart the series from scratch, the last time I did that was when A Fragmentary Passage came out in January 2017 because my then-housemates wanted to play it but had only played KH1 and KH2 before that point. So this run is overdue!

THE DARK NIGHT OF THE FEELINGS. okay so if you ever do any sort of scriptwriting at all you'll at some point stumble into blake snyder's beat sheet, which basically lays out all the steps to writing a decent script including "beats," or different sections of the story. your Opening Image, Set-up, the moment where the Theme is Stated, the Catalyst, Debate, etc whatever.

IN THE SECOND HALF OF IT, ONE SPECIFIC BEAT IS CALLED "DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL"

especially because the Dark Night of the Soul has stuck with me ever since I first read the beat sheet back in 2007 (I'd noticed long before that everything has that moment of where everything is lost and the main character wallows in pity before picking themselves back up for Act 3) and i have been known to lean over to people in movies and whisper it at the saddest, most emotional parts

And now we switch to Jade and Calliope, because that was a very satisfying scene end (yes, even with Terezi's downward glance, I did not say it was a happy scene end, but from a writer's standpoint it is a very satisfying one).

PFS and [S] Game Over.

So I have a lot of thoughts on [S] Game Over and it’s about time for me to elaborate on them! I know I already did an audio react to it but you guys will just have to bear with me here, because these are some thoughts I want to explore both for my own benefit and possibly for you guys' as well, though who knows how insightful this will actually be. I'm shooting the shit here. But I don't want to just start liveblogging again without writing something about [S] Game Over for multiple reasons, one of which being basically WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?????????

I am still boggling a little bit over this flash, to be honest. Four and a half months after I first watched and reacted to it and I'm still thinking about it and shaking my head from time to time. Because what the hell, holy shit, so many things happened in that flash. But at the same time, I don't think it was necessarily as horrifying to me as it must have been for readers who saw it happen "live," so to speak.

I'm lucky; I know that there's still a lot that hasn't been wrapped up. I haven't gotten explanation for the oil spills or the password pages, and although John and Terezi (I'm pretty much taking it as fact that John's responsible for both of these so if I'm wrong then OOPS) were both alive at the end of the flash, that does very, very little to convince me that all the other characters in that flash that died are going to stay dead.

Hussie has a very particular way of storytelling. He's willing to kill his characters off, yeah, but the way in which he goes about doing so is usually drawn out a little longer. Think about some of the deaths we've seen "onscreen:" Aradia beating Vriska and Vriska slowly bleeding out, Vriska killing Tavros, Terezi killing Vriska, Jade's death right before Cascade, Jane being assassinated by Jack, Aranea killing Jade just before this flash. Hell, even Jake's funeral could count in this! All of these had a definite buildup to it—the deaths themselves were covered over multiple pages (or in the case of the deaths that occurred during flashes, the reasoning to make the death "necessary" was shown). Sure, some deaths are sudden and shocking—take Jack stabbing John (both on his quest bed and when he and grimdark!Rose found him by their dead parents), for instance. And…

Actually, that's the only example I can think of off the top of my head. Even when killing off side characters like Equius and Nepeta, or Feferi and Sollux, Hussie still took more time than he did in this flash. (Note: I am not counting the tons and tons of dead/undead trolls sacrificed by Vriska to get Lord English to wreck shit. They were expendable, sorry.) John being stabbed by Jack is the only example I can think of where the death happened with such suddenness that I gasped aloud in surprise, and both times he comes back to life. This flash felt a lot like throwing death after death after death just for the shock value alone; if Hussie was going to actually kill off all these characters, I'd expect him to do it in a different way.

"But PFS!" you might protest. "When things start picking up and moving really fast Hussie does flashes like these! Don't you remember Cascade? Or Synchronize/Unite? Or any of the other really big flashes?"

I do indeed! But again, things in this flash just read differently—things like reused art, such as when Gamzee kills Karkat (Vriska killing Tavros), or Kanaya chainsawing Gamzee the same way she did Eridan (down to this page being pretty much recycled with color changes ). Or even to an extent the new art, which, while fun, was an entirely different style than I've come to expect from Homestuck in general. I know that Hussie has an art team that helps by drawing frames for use during the flashes, but the art style throughout the entire comic has been pretty important. We started out with the more symbolically-rendered kids/trolls, and as the story began to progress so did the art style. Important moments are generally rendered in more "realistic" terms, rather than cartoony figures like at the beginning of the Shit Going Down section.

(MIND YOU, I'm not saying anything negative against the art used because I love different styles and there's no "right" way to draw fictional characters. It's just a style I would more expect to see in fanart than flashes, is all, because it's so different from what we normally see.)

You know what death got me the most in this flash? Dave's. And he wasn't even a part of the "main" action; he was off in the distance fighting off Bec Noir and PM. So why was it the one death that made me yell the most?

Because of the art style. Because we constantly saw his fight against them in more realistically-styled art, which subconsciously raises the stakes, and then we flash back to him in the moment of his loss, where swords are running him through from either side. And that it's in unmoving silhouette, and all we see is the sword falling from his hand?

Oh man.

We see his failure and his end, the closure almost immediate as the word HEROIC glows. The music dials back, giving us a moment to catch our breath and actually comprehend, even as Kanaya's pretty much vaporized to give Rose a reason to throw herself at the Condesce. Dave's is the one death I could truly believe from this flash, because it's separated from the rest of the shitshow that's going down and because of how it's conveyed to us. Do I think it'll last? Probably not; I expect that pretty much everyone that died in this flash will be brought back somehow through Shenanigans. But Dave's was the one I could believe.

Another reason Dave's hit me harder than any of the other deaths? It didn't feel like it was being used solely to create conflict for another character. I mean, we start out the flash and you've got Gamzee goading on Karkat and Kanaya, followed by shots of them both raging. Then Karkat dies and we immediately get a shot of Terezi crying. Then back to Kanaya, still raging, and we… cut away for a little while. Because his death was solely to give the two of them visceral responses, and we needed to be left with those images rather than Karkat's hand rising from the lava, looking for help. The emphasis was put on the emotional reactions to the death, not the death itself.

So then about thirty seconds later we get back to Kanaya, still pissed (though rightfully so!), she chainsaws and quarters Gamzee, and we're treated to another shot of Terezi sobbing while Gamzee's blood spills over her. Then about ten seconds later, Kanaya's being vaporized while Terezi's shunted out of the way to sense it happening. But Kanaya has someone else invested in her too, and sure enough, as she dies we get a shot of Rose superimposed over it so that we can be positive that Rose saw it happen to trigger her attack on the Condesce.

We see six deaths happen in literally less than two minutes. It's pretty much impossible to give each of those deaths the same amount of importance in a video like this. Jake and Jane's deaths almost feel like asides from everything else to me, particularly with how, aside from that one moment with the Condesce and near the very end of the flash with Terezi, they're the only ones that move outside of the video screen. Jane is thrown out of the video box to make room for Karkat and Kanaya. We do get closure to their deaths with the HEROIC/JUST placards, and they do get a really nice rendering when Jake jumps in front of Jane to try and save her, but… there's no threat to Aranea there. Jane’s asleep, and Jake is a little bit hopeless (pun totally intended). It's a one-way fight. It means nothing in comparison to everything else, where killing Jane should be a big deal (I mean, look at how big a deal killing Jade was!).

Long story short, it all happened so fast and there wasn't enough emphasis put on the deaths to make them feel like anything more than shock value to me. And in Homestuck, things are done for much more than shock value, which tells me that I shouldn't worry too much because it's highly likely that, in conjunction with everything else, this entire flash is going to be fixed. It doesn't make sense from a storytelling point of view for everyone to stay dead!

(Also? Roxy was fuckin' badass near the end of this flash. The guitar riff when she appears and the shot of her just after she and Rose disappear? Fantastic.)
