Back in film school, I was always told not to edit your own work. If you're both the writer & director of a film, there's no objectivity as an editor. You're too close to the story they'd say, you assume too many details that leave cracks and plot holes for a first time watcher. . I didn't edit my first film. But a close friend of mine whom I respected did, and the film did well. But, he was a director like myself, so when it came time to make my second short film, I sought out a guy who was solely an editor. And it turned out to be a pacing/tone disaster. What I described as the pacing of an Ingmar Bergman film, he gave me as a Guy Ritchie film. . I had only 48 hours until premiere night, I did what everyone had advised me NOT to do. I re-edited the whole thing myself, and found that I LOVED editing! It greatly empowered my storytelling. That was 14 years ago, and I have edited every film I've shot since. .
