"Not all teen pregnancies are unplanned"
The issue of Reproductive Health in the Philippines may be centered on population control, woman’s health and well-being and responsible parenthood. But I don’t think these are the only issues that need to be looked into when we talked about RH.
Behind these pressing problems, are teens that are yet to realize their full potential. Young people who can be their greatest if they just realized how to dream and make a life for themselves, aside from aspiring to be just a plain teenage housewife or a young hardworking husband. Aside from debating if the bill is good or bad, if it is moral or immoral, if it is needed or not. We should first look into what these young people know about life and the future ahead of them. Have we asked them what they want to do once they grow up?
Instead of lecturing them the morality of abstinence or the immorality of using contraceptives, we should divert their attention into teaching them careers that they can pursue. We should teach them things that they can do to help them be successful.
I don’t think this debate will end, even if the bill has been passed, as long as there are sexually active people out there who just can’t wait for that RIGHT time.
I wonder if there will come a time where being pregnant at the age of 15 will just be normal in the Philippines. Abstinence is sure to be the BEST contraceptive, but I wonder how many people nowadays are waiting for that RIGHT time.
I recommend this movie about teenagers who made a pact to be pregnant at a very young age and how their world changed after finding out that being pregnant is more of what they are hoping for.
