Why this blog?
I have wanted to go into medicine since I was a little girl. I always assumed I would go the route of MD, and later maybe even DO, but I was very unaware of the field of podiatry. I only discovered it after being assigned to shadow a podiatrist during an internship my senior year of undergrad. After talking to the doctor extensively, I did exactly what I did when I was researching medical schools: I hit the web for inside information.
But I found nothing. No firsthand accounts of what podiatry school is like. Very few explanations of why people chose podiatry or what school they decided to go to. Just a lot of older articles about a residency shortage that isn’t even very relevant anymore. When I researched medical schools, this information was in abundance. There were blogs documenting the life of MD students in both the US and the Caribbean, of DO students, of dental and veterinary students. Packets of notes and lists of advice for how to get through it all. But none for podiatry. And I think that firsthand accounts are incredibly important in understanding what you might be getting yourself into.
So I decided to start an account of my four years in school, and maybe even residency.
I want to be able to be a resource for anyone interested in podiatry, or a way for people who don’t know anything about it to learn about it. I had never even considered podiatry school as an option for myself until I realized that it’s not all about clipping toenails, and maybe I would have thought about it sooner had there been something like this out there.
I know my opinions and perspective won’t be the same as everyone out there, but please ask any questions you may have and I will answer them to the best of my ability (or ask older students for help)!
