Age 6
Send me an age and I’ll write a drabble about my muse at that age.
Little bare feet ran across the wooden floor with a flap, flap, flap. At that age children seemed to have just learned that running was a thing and couldn’t stop doing it! Sona ran and ran, chasing after the old dog the orphanage kept at the time. She wanted his fluffy tail in her tiny hands. It always wagged just out of her grasp.
“|Sona! Stop that!|” one of the elder matrons called after her. Not in a scolding sort of way, but she didn’t want the little one to hurt herself. Wizened but still strong hands came under Sona’s tiny arms and lifted her up to hold. Such a small child. Hair was as bright as the North Star.
The dog was grateful and panted as it went over to a quiet corner to rest.
“|Come now|” the woman offered more calmly, carrying Sona past a small parade of other children. The orphanage was buzzing with activity today. They had a guest. “|Today you need to behave yourself. Someone special has come to teach you. Do you understand?|”
The little girl nodded her head the way she was taught, though actually she didn’t understand at all. She barely understood the words spoken to her. Teaching a mute child had become a difficult task for the matrons, and if they had any hope of educating her properly they needed help. Sona would need all the help she could get to appeal to prospective parents...
“Fukui-san” the older woman addressed a man sitting on a cushion and sipping tea that had been offered earlier. “|Forgive us for keeping you. You know how children are...|”
“|Not yet!|” he laughed, “|But soon, I hope! My wife and I are enjoying a few years peace together first. But look at you, small lady! What beautiful hair and eyes you have.|”
Sona was set down in front of him, standing in an awkward sort of way and clutching her hempen dress that was perhaps two sizes too big for her. Out of nervous habit she picked up a corner and attempted to put it in her mouth while staring at him. The man laughed, but the matron quickly saw to correct her. “|Behave, Sona.|”
“|It’s alright! Sona, is it? A beautiful name...|” And as he said these things, the man made gestures with his hands. Blue eyes watched them in wonder. His hands were enormous compared to her own. She reached out to grab them.
“|Yes, I’ll be teaching you!|” he smiled, holding her tiny fingers and gently moving them into shapes. “|I’m going to teach you how to talk with these. My name is Wakahisa Fukui, but you may call me Waka-sensei. Though I can’t say I’ll teach you poetry, I can teach you how to read.|”
The matron and Wakahisa chuckled at his joke, and it made Sona laugh silently to hear them. She had no idea what was going on, but it made her happy all the same.
