Flawed assumptions

An assumption is something we take for granted or presuppose. It’s something we’ve come to learn and therefore don’t stop to question it.

We assume what we believe is true and use those beliefs to interpret the world and the people around us. If our beliefs are sound, our assumptions will be, but there will always be assumptions that we think are sound that turn out to be less than. Assumptions can also be unjustified, depending on whether we have good cause or reason for them.

It is human nature for us to use our beliefs as assumptions and make inferences based on those assumptions. If it’s something we’re dealing with, our assumptions will always be right, or at least not far off the mark, but if our assumptions are based on what other people deal with, our inferences based on what they deal with may be wrong.

We make judgments based on our interpretations from assumptions and come to our conclusions from the beliefs we have formed, through those assumptions. If those assumptions are flawed, our judgments will be flawed.

Always set aside assumptions of what you think you know. Assumptions aren’t facts, they’re assumptions on what we think we know and that can cause conflict with others, particularly when we think we know what someone deals with and we really don’t.
