I must agree first love tends to linger because it's first and it's not tainted by the everyday struggles and problems of the adulthood. And I guess when the next ones suck we clutch to that idyllic image, but I think it has to stay that way - a happy memory.

I was very moved by your description of first love...you really are a wonderful writer. Now I’m an Aries like Roy, as you know, and I would behave in much the same way that he is if I thought there was a chance of reconciling with my first love ...I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night unless I knew for sure that there was no longer any spark there! There is nothing worse than living with regrets and knowing you didn’t give something 100%. The downside of that is that you don’t give much thought about who you hurt in the process. Arians are breathtakingly selfish and can justify just about anything.

But he doesn't... know her... anymore. People can change so much in ways big and small (and all very important where relationships are involved) over even a handful of years. He thinks he's not in love with a memory but all he knows of her IS memory and her current physical appearance. It's a sweet sentiment but I still don't feel like he's really thought this through. Which, I know, it's Roy so thought is kinda... whatever.

Saoirse has not been with her husband very long, only a couple of years. She married him because she was tired of the dating scene, and also her biological clock was ticking. She has been restless within the marriage though, and...

Roy will only do coke a few times a year, and usually when he is suffering some type of domestic crisis. I cannot recall him doing coke when things were okay at home. He tries to avoid drugs because he is the type of personality that has a tendency to do everything to excess. 

Roy’s moral code does not consider his visits to Crystal as being unfaithful. As far as he is concerned it is a business contract. But then again, if he was being sexually satisfied would he even have a need to see Crystal?

Yes, Georgina is a much nicer person than Roy. What might be holding Joël  back though from coming clean to Anita is her insecurities…she would probably refuse to believe that  he wasn’t having an on-going affair with Georgie. And Joël knows that for all his faults Roy would never stoop to dobbing him in to Anita…just as Joël would never tell Sonia about Crystal *snicker*

I haven’t properly explored Georgina’s current marital situation…that will probably be grist for another couple of updates. And in case you missed it, here is the explanation I posted for Roy’s behaviour in an earlier reply:

In Roy’s mind, he is not ‘doing’ anything to Joël. Roy has his own moral code and has his own ideas of right and wrong. His actions are usually dictated by what makes him happy, not what makes other people happy. And in this situation he is not motivated by anything else but his need to know what happened between Joël and Georgie that night in AP, because the fact that he didn’t know was torturing him and making him very unhappy! Roy feels it is his birthright to know everything, and when things are kept secret from him it makes him feel like a loser. And being a loser is anathema to Roy. He has to win at everything. So Roy being Roy, he treated finding out what happened between Georgie and Joël that night as a competition. And now he’s found out the truth, he believes that he’s won the competition. So now he’s happy ;=)

Roy strolls down the drab hospital corridors, resisting the impulse to whistle, following the sound of clinking cutlery and the growing hum of conversation to the cafeteria. He recognises Dr Tom Saigon immediately, because he has been Googling the fuck out of him for several months now, ever since he found out about Sonia pleasuring herself with his syphilitic pencil dick. He is talking to one of his cohorts and looks like a corrupt priest, even more so in person, although Roy is temporarily disconcerted by how tall he is. Not that it matters; he barely looks like he'd have the strength to open a jar of peanut butter, let alone beat anyone in a fight. Roy smiles to himself, enjoying the adrenaline fizzing through his body. He flexes his fingers and glances around the room, biding his time, waiting for just the right moment to present itself.

Saigon finishes yapping to his lady doctor friend and sits down at a table at the back of the room. It couldn't be better; he's going to be cornered, he'll have nowhere to run. It takes a second or two to dawn on Roy that Genevieve is sitting at the table too. He's Googled pictures of the two of them but he would never have recognised Gen; she looks like a twelve year old waif, her skin translucent, her arms like sticks, cheekbones hollow beneath sunken eyes ringed by violet smudges. For the first time since he's arrived at the hospital Roy hesitates. Saigon is talking to her, trying to coax her into doing something; she shakes her head repeatedly, a bowl of food untouched in front of her. Then she bursts into tears. Roy almost puts his fist through the front of the glass food display. She's in a fucking wheelchair. Saigon is patting her hand and now he's kneeling down and hugging her legs while she plays with his fucking hair, tears shining on her gaunt, beautiful face. Roy stares, incredulous, seething, impotent. There's no way he can assault a man whose face is buried in his wheelchair-bound wife's lap, for Christ's sake. Roy feels a grudging admiration start to dilute the anger swirling through his veins. Well played, Saigon, you cunning fucking son-of-a-bitch. Well played.

When Genevieve and Tom were deciding whether to buy this house it was the fact that it was lakeside that finally persuaded them. The lake was deep and ringed by aesthetically pleasing trees and home to a modest variety of fish and birds and amphibians, the surrounding parklands popular with dog-walkers and joggers. And every couple of years, the real estate agent told Tom, it got cold enough for the lake to freeze over. Tom had many happy memories of ice-skating as a child. Genevieve had no memories of ice-skating at all.

They had lived here for 12 months, baby Lilah not yet conceived, when they first witnessed the lake freezing. They went out and bought skates and joined the excited throng of people taking to the ice. Tom thought of himself as a reasonably accomplished skater and he held Gen's hand tightly, expecting her to stumble and slip until she got the hang of it. But after ten seconds it was apparent Genevieve's ice-skating skills were far superior to his own. She was fast and fearless, she executed flawless spins, and he just stood and watched her, shocked and awed. He had asked her gently afterwards "Are you really sure you can't remember having ice-skated before?" and she had shook her head and scowled, angry with him for reminding her of the differences between her and everyone else.
