Any ideas about what the song pretty visitors is about?
I think Alex uses metaphors related to carnival situations to explain what goes through some fan minds when they make an attempt to understand and get to the bottom of the meaning of songs, lyrics and their music in general. The ‘pretty visitors’ wave their arms, for me represents what he sees at shows, lots of people waving their arms and singing along to his songs, but do they really know what they’re about? When it says ‘And the bicycle wheels, all struggle to move round in your muddy mind’ I interpret this as what goes through someone’s head when they try to get an idea of what a song means, probably looks like the inside of a clock with all the rounded parts trying to move but finding it impossible because its ‘muddy’, that person’s head cannot thin deep enough.'Split sleep reaps through rewards and ill fitting thoughts, and twilight forced you to go on a walk, your legs start running and your head gets caught' keeps describing how even if you think you know what some lyrics meant 'reward' 'start running', your head keeps getting caught in these ill fitting thoughts, doubts, when you think is this what it really means? or am I completely wrong? Maybe when you're sleeping, so this ill fitting thoughts force you to wake up and go on a walk to clear your mind (metaphorically)'behold there's a crook in the hammock plays cruelly with the base of the scales and fiddles with the feet on a balancing act, gagged, bound and crafting a tale, trailing wrapped in a gasp' this line makes me think of an acrobat and the moves he makes when he's performing, which again represents the thoughts of someone cracking his head and bending his brain trying to understand what the lyrics mean ‘Cast the shadow of a snake pit on the wall’ a snake pit is like a punishment place or somewhere ugly and bad, so when the pretty visitors came and waved their arms (they sang along to lyrics they have absolutely no idea what they mean), they cast the shadow of a snake pit on the wall (they make Alex remember how much he dislikes this, writing about things that mean a lot to him and then having all these people sing along to it without knowing what he meant). He feels like maybe people interpret the songs superficially and miss the point of what he was trying to express. It reminds me of Mr Jones by Bob Dylan because it describes a type of person who is very rational and cant look past the simple meaning of things and cant have deep thoughts, so they cant understand what he wants to say with his music, or maybe a person who wants to know the exact meaning of the song, whats it about, what experience, which person, what was the inspiration behind it, what every single word mean, etc. I think as Dylan, Alex sometimes does this thing of writing about an idea or a mood that can’t be easily explained but somehow you know what he meant and you can relate to it. Sometimes music and art in general is not that exact and specific, its abstract, it comes from within, maybe from your subconscious or your feelings and it cant be so easily explained. Ironically, its what I just tried to do. Its very likely that Im completely wrong with this, its just my interpretation. Feel free to correct me if Im wrong or to tell me your thoughts on this song please
