the family concepts and cult worldbuilding. credits to M0th-Gh0st for the robes concept entirely, I just built on the idea and worked it into my interpretation because I adored it

LEADERS RITE OF PASSAGE: There are many rituals in which The Family takes part in, many of which extend far back in time and are held up through tradition alone, rather than necessity. One of these is the Leader's rite of passage, in which the new leader of the family forfeits their body to The Speaker and his will. This is similar in nature to previous rituals the individual will participate in, in which they sacrifice all ties to their life outside of the faith and dedicate themselves wholly to the cause. This rite can be earned either through branding or by carving, the scar tissue displaying the symbol held through generations to display faith, often on the back, side, or chest, depending on size and gender of the participant and the age at which the Leader was promoted or chosen. The display of suffering is proof to their dedication and a graceful act, something to take great pride in, as suffering is the first step to enlightenment. Any great pains will be soon soothed as the new mouthpiece for The Speaker is gifted to the lord in display of their loyalty and gain the great right to listen to the whispering provided. Here, they will gain knowledge of the next steps to take in their new role in our beloved Family.

THE ROBES & MASKS Unlike the Leader and the preachers of the religion, The Family's average member does not adhere to a specific dress code outside of their gifted mask for their everyday meetings or worship. However, there are occasions where it is necessary. Members often wear these as well for rituals, holidays, and other special designation. These robes are specially made, with certain colors dictating rank. Purple trim for Leaders, red for elder members and those of great importance within the Family, and white for general masses. Due to the efforts to keep intense and often violent knowledge granted by the Speaker for these special occasions, it is often only those on the inner circle of the following who get to participate in these events and, therefore, are requested to wear the proper attire. Leaders are required to don their robes any time they make an appearance to the grander audience. No other members are permitted to wear those robes— aside from the second in command, on the rare chance that the Leader is incapable of delivering their message, or the Leader previous to the current one in power. The masks are also of great importance— it is a key point in the ideology of The Family that to bare the symbol is a point of pride and a declaration that one is to be protected, a sign that you will be upon the few to find greatness in the new world, and that for an outsider to bare witness to the face beneath the mask is a great disservice to the individual wearing it. After all, outsiders and heretics are a vile type of poison.
