“hello my riley riley.” you bend down as riley makes her way over to you. you run your fingers through her fur and give her a scratch. you stand as you lets the dogs greet next. you scan the park for simon and frown when you don’t see him.
another man makes his way over, riley’s leash in hand. he walks over with, what you assume, is his own dog. unleashed but by his side.
“your not simon riley.” you’re not sure why you say it. it doesn’t come out accusingly but it’s not polite.
“no. not last i checked anyway.” he laughs. he stands easy, relaxed. his eyes curious as they take you in. “price. john price.”
“oh your the boss.” your posture eases a fraction. you let your eyes run over the man. he’s softer than simon. more comfortable with himself maybe. doesn’t shrink himself.
“also a friend i hope.”
“yes. from the way he talks about you.” you confirm. you’d learnt a little about simon through your meetings at the dog park, and then more when he had walked you home. you’d learnt of john, kyle and johnny. he mentioned a brother once, in passing. it didn’t feel appropriate to ask for more at the time.
your eyes filter back over the park as if your looking for something.
“i’m just looking after his girl for the night. didn’t realise till now why he specified this park.”
you look to at the dogs, hands on your hips as you raise a brow. “yes they do make an odd pair of friends don’t they.” you watch as they play. riley riley is tough, doesn’t mind playing with the bigger, stronger dog. your own riley though, he surprises you. he’s gentle where he needs to be and listens to her corrections when he oversteps.
john doesn’t correct. no, he just smiles and watches the dogs chase each other.
the older dog then comes to you. wet nose sniffing at you hand when you bend to meet them. “and who might you be?”
“this ol’ girl is maggie.”
“is it your wife that does the rehoming military dogs?” you ask. you don’t look up, too enthralled with sweet maggie.
john can’t hold back his surprised smile. he’s not sure what delights him more, that simon has shared a part of his life with you or that he gets to talk about his pretty wife.
“yes,” his voice comes out a little louder than he intended. he clears his throat and tries again. “yes. my wife organises them.”
john goes on to tell you about his wife. how she love animals. about how it started and how it’s going. he gave numbers, how many dogs have had homes. how many women and men had reached out to thank them. he sounded very involved though he gave all credit to her.
the conversation turned to his own dogs then. he had seven including maggie. he liked to take them out separately sometimes. give them all some one on one time.
then the conversation turns back to simon.
you pause. unsure of the level of friendship you’ve reached with simon. you’d been looking forward to seeing him this afternoon, you feel the disappointment fall heavily in your chest. “is simon… okay?” you tentatively ask.
