Healthcare in the US is borderline demonic
Growing up in Jamaica, my family never had insurance. I hardly understood health insurance as a concept. Despite this, we survived. Sure, I went to the dentist once or twice in my 18 years in Jamaica but when we were sick and had to go to the doctor my parents were able to scrape by. Thankfully, someone from church, a friend of my dad from church ministry, who worked as a pediatric clinic saw us for free when he was available.
When I came to the US, I had insurance for the first time. I was able to have annual checkups, dental and vision checkups. And I was so grateful for the reduced fees.
However, I am currently without insurance now and I recently had a medical issue that probably could have healed on its own but it was causing me a lot of pain. Thankfully I found a clinic which offered a sliding fee scale for lower income people so I only had to pay $25 for the visit and my medicine at the pharmacy was also discounted. Super grateful.
But otherwise my situation went downhill. The clinic was unable to help me so the doctor sent me to the hospital across the street to visit the emergency department. Honestly I don't know why she didn't send me to urgent care instead but that's water under the bridge.
When I get to the ED, I ask the nurse how much the visit will cost because I have a bad financial situation. She is totally clueless. She sends a guy to tell me about insurance application and charity assistance. How come these freaking medical people can't tell you how much a simple procedure will cost???!!!
A week later I finally get my bill. I was thinking that it would be $2000 max due to it being the ED. NOPE! The bill came up to OVER $4000!!! God as my witness, I nearly had a heart attack. The procedure was so simple - I was able to get it done easily at the primary doctor at my work's health center.
If I had this issue in Jamaica, the bill would be nowhere near this high! Why is the medical industry in the US full of so many thieves!!! Why the lack of price transparency!!! I feel robbed. I pray my application for financial assistance goes through because $4000 is a good chunk of my savings 😭
Doctors accuse authorities of 'betrayal' as enforcers descend on clinics over price display
The Federation of Private Medical Practitioners’ Associations of Malaysia (FPMPAM) has accused authorities of betrayal as enforcement officers began inspecting clinics under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Order 2025, despite a promised three-month grace period. FPMPAM president Dr Shanmuganathan TV Ganeson condemned the move, noting officers issued three-day ultimatums to display…
Everyone wants price transparency in health care, except for . . . well, almost everyone.
Everyone wants price transparency in health care, except for . . . well, almost everyone.
Price transparency in health care is a great idea.
Let’s say your house needs a new roof. You solicit three bids, you obtain references, and you choose the cheapest, best referemced roofer. That’s the way to make expensive purchases.
Let’s say you need an operation. You can do the same: Solicit three bids from doctors, anesthesiologists, hospitals and the hospitals’ pharmacies, and you obtain…

One point drew clear agreement Tuesday during a House subcommittee hearing: When it comes to the problem of surprise medical bills, the solution must protect patients — not demand that they be great negotiators.
“It is the providers and insurers, not patients, who should bear the burden of settling on a fair payment,” said Fre…
