🏳️‍🌈 LGBTQ Pride Mags #30: The Advocate, "Newspaper of America's Homephile Community," 1967-present.

The Advocate started as a local bar publication in Los Angeles in 1967, but eventually became a nationally-distributed bi-weekly newspaper in the mid-70s. In late 1985 the paper transformed into a magazine format. The Advocate has been through a number of owners but is still publishing a print edition six times a year.

🏳️‍🌈 LGBTQ Pride Mags #29: The Furies, "Lesbian/Feminist Monthly,” 1972-73.

Published 1972-73 by a lesbian separatist collective in Washington, DC. The Furies didn't last long, but its writing had a big influence on lesbian and feminist theory and organizing, and many of the collective members went on to do distinguished work in other areas (author Rita Mae Brown was an early member).

🏳️‍🌈 LGBTQ Pride Mags #27: Christopher Street, 1976-95.

Published monthly in New York City, 1976-95, for a national audience. Owned and edited by Charles Orleb, who also published the biweekly New York Native newspaper, Christopher Street was conceived as the gay version of The New Yorker, and featured fiction, essays, reviews, art, photography and cartoons. The founding art director was Rick Fiala, a prolific illustrator and cartoonist who created many of the magazine's cartoons, using a variety of styles and pseudonyms. While later cover designs owed much to the style of Milton Glaser's New York magazine look, early issues were more New Yorker-like, with illustrations and no cover lines. In later years Christopher Street and the New York Native devoted considerable space to publisher Orleb's fringe conspiracy theories about the AIDS virus, and both publications became increasingly isolated from the gay community.

🏳️‍🌈 LGBTQ Pride Mags #25: GenderFlex, "A Polygenderous Publication," 1991-94.

Published and edited by Billie Jean Jones, 1991-94 in Sacramento, CA. GenderFlex featured funny, biting, smart and very idiosyncratic personal stories and commentary on transgender-related events and culture.

🏳️‍🌈 LGBTQ Pride Mags #22: Butt, 2001-11, "Fantastic Magazine for Homosexuals."

Butt was founded in 2001 by Gert Jonkers and Job van Bennekom in the Netherlands, and published quarterly until 2011. Published on pink paper in digest size (one review called it "pocket-size, pink and super gay"), Butt featured such a mix of provocative photos, interviews, stories, and sex, that it led writer Hilton Als to ask in an essay "Is Butt magazine the greatest publication in the world?"
