"Occasion?" Renji blinks. There was none. Now that he thought about it a bit more, it did seem a bit odd to gift his captain an entire cake without an rhyme or reason, wasn't it? At the time though, he'd merely wanted to, and so he did.

"There isn't one..." he finds himself answering, walking back to Byakuya's desk. "Um I just wanted to, I guess?" He nods when asked if this was something he made, suddenly shy. Many weren't aware of his hobby and he realized that it might seem comical.

He looks down at the cake, a perfect slice missing, sitting on a small plate in front of Byakuya. "I.. made it for you though! So. I want you to enjoy it. I had plenty to try when I was making it."

Not that he was opposed to sharing. No, in fact, he would love to sit down and share some cake with Byakuya and chat about trivial things. Just the thought was enough to keep him going.

Shinji wasn't sure why Byakuya was sharing drinks with him but he'd order some... if it was on the Kuchiki tab though... "Shoul' invite th' others here..." He meant the visored. "'m wishin' we got t'gether more..." Was that a regret? Yeah, he regrets leaving them behind...

"Yer lies might work on other people, but it doesn't on me." It had been subtle, but Renji could pick up on the minute differences in his captain today.

The way Byakuya had been zoning out when spoken to, missing some small details on reports, and avoiding Renji's eyes when they talked- it was all that Renji needed to know that his captain wasn't exactly at the top of his game today.

"How many days have ya stayed late? How many days have ya come in early? And please don't tell me that yer takin' work home..." All rhetorical questions that Renji already knew the answers to. He frowned, then put a hand over the reports that Byakuya was currently working on.

"Please go home. I can take over fer the day."
