The phrase ‘Lavender Menace’ was used by feminists in the 1960-70s to exclude, dismiss, and erase lesbians, whom they saw as a threat to the movement as a whole. In response, a humorous and nonviolent protest was arranged at the Second Congress to Unite Women. Protestors donned hand-dyed and silk screened shirts reading ‘Lavender Menace’. They filled the aisles, laughing and giving rebel yells, rallied the crowd, passed out manifestos, and then took the stage to address homophobia and lesbian rights.

These shirts were hand-printed in honor of the advent of lesbian feminism. Through them, we hope to continue to fight lesbian erasure, strengthen our community, and share lesbian pride. Let’s carry on the reclamation of Lavender Menace to convey that we are strong and stand together.
