"Priest 3D" Review
by Gerry Carey
It may shock you because it actually shocked me, but despite the reviews it got, Priest was not a terrible movie. In fact, I might go as far as to say it was close to being a legitimately good action movie. Of course, this is all under the assumption that you can suspend reality and buy into what Paul Bettany is selling. Which is a priest that kicks all kinds of ass.
Priest is set in world where humans and vampires have been battling throughout time, with priests being the strongest and most skilled warriors man can produce. Man has prevailed in this war, for now, but the priests are forced into hiding due to the fighting threat they impose on the tyrannical church. Our priest, who remains unnamed throughout, has given up his anonymity when his niece is kidnapped by group of vampires that are working to bring this conflict back. And this priest is far from pleased.
The movie features elements that range in quality from fairly well done to alarmingly poor. The best of the best is Paul Bettany. I know fans of Paul have been burned in the past by his questionable movie decisions (Legion), but he really delivered in this one. He plays a brooding hero with nothing on his mind but vengeance and rescuing his niece. After watching some of his previous roles, A Knight’s Tale, A Beautiful Mind, Legion, I didn’t think this role suited him, but he definitely made it work. I believed that he actually was a priest that routinely murders vicious vampires. Certainly not an easy sell.
I also felt the action was well done. The special effects weren’t amazing but they worked well enough with the actors to create some cool and memorable scenes. That said, if you are someone that only enjoys realistic action, you can probably skip this one because these action sequences are pretty off-the-wall.
Now that we got the good aspects out of the way, we reach the shame of this movie, and really any movie he appears in: Cam Gigandet. I have seen him Twilight, Burlesque, The Roommate, and nowPriest. He is miserable. I can’t imagine a worse performance than the one I saw here. He delivers lines as if he has never felt an actual human emotion. After or during each action sequence that was fun he manages to toss in his split second of vomit-inspiring word spitting and ruin them. And what’s funny is, I can’t figure out what his character was supposed to add to the movie. He isn’t cool. He doesn’t have any weapon, map, or information that the main characters don’t have. And of course he can’t act. He is useless. He brought this movie down several notches.
So the movie is an exercise in action. The story is very simple and it serves its only purpose in getting you from fight to fight. Paul Bettany is very cool as the hero while Cam Gigandet tries to ruin everything. I maintain that anyone who loves action movies should give this movie a watch and decide for themselves. The movie sports an impressively low 17% on RottenTomatoes but this score is not representative of the film. Give it a shot and yell at me if I’m wrong.
Rating: 5.8/10- See it for yourself.
