cw: sexual assault mention at 2:20-2:30
The joke that Celine Shimizu quoted in her article is found in this video at 25:00.
The whole video is rather funny and includes many instances of Margaret Cho “perverting” racialized sexual identity of Asian women. At 54:00 she has an extended joke about locating the “G-Spot.” Please note that the clip contains graphic language and graphic descriptions of the vulva.
“Broken Speak is the signature album by Asian American spoken word collective I Was Born With Two Tongues. Comprised of Anida Yoeu Ali, Marlon Esguerra, Emily Chang, and Dennis "Denizen Kane" Kim, Two Tongues was a seminal voice for the millennial Asian Pacific Islander American spoken word and performance movement.”
All of these are great, but specifically listen to Not Your Fetish (Remix). CW: graphic language.
Ex Machina is a 2015 film that explores the development of Artificial Intelligence. This is a really awesome movie and though my curation is only a few scenes, I recommend people watch the whole thing if they get the chance, it is one of my favorites. If you can’t watch the whole movie, I’d recommend reading a synopsis online so you get the idea of the plot. Also: the curations will lead to big spoilers, just so everyone knows.
Another thing: I’ve attached a link to a very poor quality YouTube video of the entire movie (the picture is slightly zoomed in and slanted). The movie is free on Amazon Prime Video which you can access if you have a paid Amazon Prime or Amazon Prime Student account. I would recommend watching there, if you can. If not, the above link will do.
I want to specifically analyze the role of the character Kyoko in the film and what her representation and function within the film says about the broader representation of Asian/American women in media.
Please note that the Second Clip includes the beginnings of a sex scene. The Fourth Clip includes female nudity, the violent imprisonment of Female presenting robots, and body horror. The Fifth Clip includes body horror, blood, and violence.
