There’s a lot happening there. And even though I finished this painting almost a year ago, I still struggle with the same intense contradiction.

Rejection and embrace, sharp and mild, corrosive acid and dance of shadows, the cosmic emptiness and the human soul. I hope painting will make sense to you.

Henri Rousseau, a self-taught artist known as "Le Douanier" ("The Customs Officer"), studied exhibits at the Paris Natural History Museum and Jardin des Plantes to create the exotic jungle scenes for which he is best known. His style, which is characterized by a flatness that defies conventional notions of perspective, influenced avant-garde artists such as Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger, and Max Beckmann, as well as the ekphrastic poems of Wallace Stevens.
