Song Review: Ryley Walker - “Rang Dizzy”
Uber-prolific, ultra-experimental Ryley Walker is back to his psych-folk ways on “Rang Dizzy.”
Melding a jazzy backbeat with cello-and-electric-guitar runs and acoustic undertones, Walker marvels at his successful struggle to get - and stay - sober.
I’m wise/I’m so fried/rang dizzy inside/fuck me, I’m alive, he sings.
The lead single from Course in Fable (April 2) harkens back to earlier records like Primrose Green and Golden Sings that Have Been Sung but with a world-weary maturity that suits the music well.

Album Review: Ryley Walker - Deafman Glance
On Deafman Glance, Ryley Walker seems to have taken myriad snippets and forced them into nine songs full of tempo shifts, changes of thematic scenery and segues that are occasionally smooth and often awkward.
The result is an album that has more moments within tracks than standout numbers.
With murky production, fuzzy electric guitar and flittering flute dominating, Deafman Glance, much like its immediate predecessors, yawns like it’s 4 in the morning. But unlike its predecessors, Deafman Glance lacks the sparkle of either Primrose Green or Golden Sings That Have Been Sung.
Walker mostly mumbles and murmurs his way through the record, which is bracketed by highlights “Castle Dome” and “Spoil with the Rest.” It bogs down early with dearth-of-melody tunes like the cacophonous “Accommodations” and the ethereal “Can’t Ask Why.”
The acoustic instrumental “Rocks on Rainbow” recalls Walker’s terrific work with fellow guitarist Bill MacKay. But it sounds out of place amid the din and only calls attention to Deafman Glance’s unfulfilled potential.
Maybe Walker should have fleshed out some of the cooler ideas that pop up throughout the LP. Or maybe this is exactly the record he wanted to make. Either way, fans of his earlier work are likely to be left scratching their heads and looking for more treble in the mix.
