They represent my people, my country, my pride, my - They are my burdens. And they killed me.

Lore Fact of the Week #7

The Balnir farmstead, located just northeast of Lordaeron city, bred horses that were regularly bought by the royal Menethil household. It is there where Invincible, Prince Arthas’ future mount, was born to a mare named Brightmane when the young prince was just nine years old [Arthas, Chapter One].

The knights of Lordaeron have an informal tradition of naming their horses after qualities. Uther the Lightbringer’s horse was named “Steadfast,” and King Terenas’s was known as “Courageous.” Following this tradition, Arthas named his horse Invincible [Arthas, Chapter Two].

Invincible had white coloring that was particularly rare among Balnir-bred horses, since most “white” Balnir horses were in fact gray. Had he not died prematurely, Invincible would have been responsible for bearing Arthas in ceremony and on daily rides, as he was not a warhorse [Arthas, Chapter Two].

Invincible died in an accident when he was nine years old, just a few months before Arthas was to turn nineteen and join the Order of the Silver Hand. The noble steed, who slipped on ice and shattered his forelegs during a winter storm, was buried at the Balnir farmstead at the young prince’s behest [Arthas, Chapter Four]. Seven years later, Arthas returned to Invincible’s grave and brought him back from the dead to serve as his steed once again using his newly acquired necromancy powers [Arthas, Chapter Sixteen].
