it's actually in the terms that dA can't sell your shit without your permission or it's fucking illegal so hot topic is in the wrong here, probably not dA
I never make comments on these things because I am an anxious individual who hates conflict but here’s my two cents:
I took a passing glance at the submission policy and I already had my doubts about dA’s involvement in the art theft. It seems quite clear that deviantArt doesn’t condone third-party theft, but neither is it apparent that they’re taking measures to protect artists from third-party theft. It’s a serious matter when deviantArt is a primary platform by independent artists trying to make commercial profit through their website, or just generally need a platform to share art with others.
The fact that third-party theft continues to happen on deviantArt (and I’ve seen many cases) just proves that their submission policy is bullshit - implies that deviantArt will do nothing to protect the users it serves despite its influence and mass availability in the online art community.*
Anyway, that’s all I’m willing to say about the matter - I’m currently stressed about other things, and the reblog was not meant to incite any serious debate (not that I’m sensing any malice behind your asks or anything!) I reblogged it because I deemed it interesting and important in the context of art and the politics/culture surrounding it, and not because I wanted to make a statement. If I did want to make a statement, I would have enclosed a comment with the reblog.
EDIT TO ADD FURTHER COMMENT: I want to clarify that the chief reason why I feel deviantArt is also in the wrong here is that it also makes the user responsible for the theft that occurs on its site. I haven't used deviantArt in a long time so I can't remember the specifics of the common-use policies it makes you review while you submit art, but seeing as third-party users can still steal art despite these policies also point to a failure on deviantArt's part.
