Correct me if I’m wrong, but as far as I can tell, this is the only time in any Mickey Mouse cartoon that Minnie has worn a wedding dress. (I think there was a dream sequence in an older cartoon where she only had a veil)

Their Importance: Considering that this book was written in the 19th century, the fact that she takes such an active role in the plot is remarkable. Despite worrying about being a burden to the protagonists after being rescued her quick thinking proves to be invaluable and she even takes part in a shootout when the train the heroes are on is attacked- none of this is treated as particularly unusual by the narrative. In the end, she marries Phileas Fogg and despite the very active bigotry against interracial relationships that were still present decades after the book was published there are no issues for either of them. Plus Fogg always treats her as an equal partner, respecting her intelligence and contributions.

Issues: Given that 80 Days was written in the 19th century there are still plenty of racist ideas in there with plenty of unflattering caricatures of non-western cultures. Also, a lot of adaptions still use brownface or whitewash Aouda.

I believe the "modern" around the world in 80 days" ditched princess Aouda as a love interest because they don't want to handle Britain's past colonizing India.

Which I find to be quite pathetic.

In the 80s version, for example, colonization was acknowledged and the character of Aouda often was the one who gave criticism to the way the British treated her country but also the way Americans treated Native Americans.

I am biased because she is one of my favourite characters in the 80s version, but it does feel like lazy storytelling and saying that modern audiences would feel uncomfortable with the colonization

there are ways to go around things, acknowledge the past and write even more compelling storylines.

In the novel Aouda makes Fogg a softer person, he comes out very stoic and almost emotionless, so yeah, I think it's important.

Can I just say that...

...For all the issues the old Around the World in 80 Days movie has, the fact that Princess Aouda is the one to propose to Fogg makes me ridiculously happy. :D
