What didn’t you like about Meteora’s villain arc? What, in your opinion, would have made it better?
I have four simple words prepared every time this question or argument comes up:
Ludo In The Wild.
We all know Ludo In The Wild is one of the best episodes of Star Vs EVER (at least, imo). It took a an annoying low-tier villain none of us were really invested in and put him in a serious light while preparing him mentally and physically for bigger challenges. Can you imagine how his arc would've been if Star had just thrown him through a portal and he just ended up finding Toffee's wand in the woods the very next scene? Boring and anti-climactic, right?
Well, that's exactly what the writers did to Miss Heinous. They took a villain we were only mildly interested in and only seldom looked forward to her next appearance, then just plopped her in a huge important plot role out of nowhere. Barely any buildup at all, and the little buildup she did get was too inconsequential for anyone to care about. She never got her Ludo In The Wild, no big episode revealing subtle things about her backstory while putting through trials that prepare her character for the new important role they threw on her shoulders.
You know what still makes me mad? The Meteora Reveal (yet another long rant, brace yourself).
Don't get me wrong, I still liked the episode, and the reveal itself. But nothing led up to it! Heinous spent her entire life knowing she was half monster and hiding it, but we weren't given any hints about it! We weren't given any hints in the slightest that she used her big hair to cover her horns, or that she wore long sleeves and gloves and makeup to hide her arms, or that she wore big hoop skirt dresses to hide her tail. Up until that moment, the "Heinous is the Monster Love baby" was a crack theory no one took seriously and no one thought would actually be true.
I get that the show has no obligation to give us hints about that stuff. But Jesus Christ, writers, pick your plot twist! Some things are appropriate to throw at us out of nowhere, like Toffee being one with all magic (though even that had a few hints), but some twists have to be hinted at to be engaging. Especially when dealing with a character nobody cares about otherwise.
Once again, I reference one of the best episodes of all time: Ludo In the Wild. If the show had only plopped Ludo back down onto Mewni and had him find the wand, we wouldn't have cared. If Ludo In the Wild hadn't happened, we wouldn't have waited with baited breath for the next time Ludo showed up. But it did, and we did; whether or not he was likeable, Ludo became compelling.
Heinous never got her "Ludo In the Wild". She never got an episode that put her in a desperate situation to reveal her true colors and/or subtly gave us insight into her history. She never got her compelling "coming into importance" epiosde that propelled her into a more important plot role. I was never waiting with baited breath for the next time Heinous would show up. She was kind of just there and then gone, and I was no more or less concerned about her each time.
I would've loved to see little hints about her being half monster. I would've loved to see her rushing to hide her horns or tail from other eyes the same way she did with her cheek marks (it actuallu would've made more sense than covering up her marks). I would've loved to see her more desperate to suppress her flaws because of her brainwashing by St. Olga, and subtly reveal to us that she's so desperate to hide herself because she's a monster. She didn't have bw made likeable, just compelling.
But the only hint we ever got that she was a monster was her disdain when referencing Star's Mewman blood. And even that, without other hints, felt confusing and out of nowhere. Overall, my opinion is that depending on how a character is received by an audience, you gotta pick your plot twists when dealing with them. Sometimes plot twists can come out of nowhere and be totally fine, but some plot twists have to have a little buildup. And Heinous never got the buildup she needed, which is one of the greatest disappointments in the show.
This may be obvious to everyone else but I think Meteora's lesson was not just about how to Dip Down, but also maybe about how even if you do bad things you can still change and be a better person. Unless you're Toffee. Because jerks like him never learn.
Its so interesting to me seeing how different Meteora's two baby forms are. At first I thought her more monster-y form was a redesign for her "rebirth" but she is shown looking that way in a flashback. Yet in another flashback from the same episode she's shown with lighter colors and less pronounced monster-ness save for the tail and fang. Why is this? Was her being away from her parents and other monsters a cause for the change in looks even as a baby?
My theory for why Meteora is acting the way she is towards Marco
I know a good portion of us are thinking the worse and that she secretly remembers everything and that at some point soon she’ll go after everyone(along with the fact that everyone is thinking she’ll be growing up pretty fast), but honestly the other day a thought that could explain her behavior popped in my head and I had to share it.
What if her behavior is some form of reincarnation?
I know this sounds crazy and stupid cause how does that make sense?!? She’s still the same person!! And true that’s a fair argument to my theory but, please hear me out.
You know all those cases in which children say that they have memories of their previous life and at first they’re written off as just a kid messing around but then they start giving really consistent details and they keep going on about it longer than most people would think a kid would pull this for? And you know that some of those cases get looked into and it turns out that the kids are actually telling the truth?
Well I think that could be happening with Meteora. She could be remembering her life as Heinous/first time Meteora and, when she’s finally able to speak, she’ll be going through a period of her time where she’s saying all these things about who she use to be. I know what most of you are thinking, if that does happen, wouldn’t it be a big problem for our beloved characters? Well here’s the thing about those cases, the kids that have this going on eventually stop doing it, or at least the memories start to fade and eventually they forget the person they were talking about is gone, it’s kinda like the spirits last hurrah! And I think that could apply with Meteora, the memories of Heinous eventually go away and she can’t remember them at all.
She’ll be a clean slate and no one would be able to deny it at that point
She's so cute and spooky HELP
