Ice On My Teeth/Mafia/Chess Discourse

Prepare for my dissertation

So we're all familiar with this still from the Ice On My Teeth MV

This photo mirrors a chess board (as illustrated in this video ) As an Italian American and specifically a Sicilian American I'd like to take this a step further with the Mafia allegory.

To start we'll of course highlight our Don, the boss at the top, Hongjoong. The buck stops with the Don and all decisions go through him. Obviously the King on a chessboard

The Underboss is of course Seonghwa. The Underboss takes responsibility when the boss is away. In a lot of ways the Underboss takes care of a lot of the daily running of "the family". Think- San taking the gift Yunho was given. Seonghwa silently takes it from him and gives it back to Yunho. Seonghwa often delivers diplomatic but heartfelt answers in interviews. Seonghwa wants to be realistic but also nobody is allowed too close to the family. Obviously the Queen on the chessboard.

Next our Consigliere Yunho. Consigliere is a title for the mediator, often liaising with other families. The Consigliere is often described as the right-hand man. Yunho and Hongjoong are tight. Yunho was the first to show up at Hongjoong's gallery show. Yunho is always at the scene of the crime trying to break up the fight, calm a dispute or if it's particularly stupid laugh along.

Next we have our two Capos (caporegime). In this case we'll see Jongho and San. Their roles mimic the rook, on its face unassuming but powerful nonetheless. These two are the definition of quiet leadership.

Hear me out! Even though Jongho is maknae he's an older brother and a Libra. He strives for balance- in unit interviews he's mature, confident and measured. With the group he often is a quiet power exp. picking up Yeosang, generally protecting Yeosang. Jongho will quietly nudge a member back in line or to prompt them for an answer. He is also quite capable of bullying the brats.

San has a similar energy. Think of that time he shut Wooyoung up just by standing over him. San's also made a name for himself in fashion and with solo dance performances. Not only can he keep his own boys in line- he's looking to expand operations, all with the Don's permission of course.

Now we have our soldatos Wooyoung, Yeosang, Mingi. Soldatos take on a variety of tasks but they are the main workers of "the family". I'm thinking visual dance and rap work. Even though there's 3 of them they mimic the bishop- they have they own, not always predictable, sources of power.

Wooyoung is a bit of cugine (cousin literally but like tough guy trying to make something) but he's the most effective bookie any of them have seen. He charms the pants off everyone on his list and never has late payments.

Mingi is chief corrupter. This is the person in charge of bribing political officials. Mingi is charasmatic and can get what he wants. He's also big enough that when he joins the table he's guaranteed to make an impression.

Yeosang is for sure the fence. He's got worldwide connections, he flies under the radar (who would suspect such a beautiful innocent face) and he can procure plenty of black market goods for Wooyoung to take from him.
