Tears streamed down Seohyun’s face as she gripped onto Ellin’s hand. Violent sobs racked through her, and she gasped for air while her friend heaved some of her last. The sound of screams were muffled by the walls that protected them from further damage. But of course, for there to be the possibility of further damage would mean that some sort of damage had already been done. 

She thought that it would be okay. She thought it was safe. There hadn’t been any sightings of the creatures in weeks. When you’re locked up inside a metal box for months on end, you eventually miss the sun— no matter how safe said metal box keeps you. So finally, they decided to go outside for a while. Thirty minutes, at most.

It wasn’t even ten minutes before the first wave of them came. The attack was sudden; they were caught off guard. Ellin panicked and ran. But you’re not supposed to run from them. After getting bit, it was Seohyun’s turn to panic. Without any hesitation, she caught the suddenly paled girl as she fell to the ground, and somehow carried her back to the shelter.

Ellin was now shaking violently and Seohyun felt the girl going limp in her hold. She took deep breaths and croaked out, “E-Ellin?”

Though her breaths were shallow, the weakened girl managed to form words, “Seo… Why’d… why’d you bring me here? It’s a risk to everyone.” 

"I-I couldn’t just leave you out there." 

"So I wouldn’t die?" Ellin laughed humorlessly, but immediately gagged, suddenly convulsing into spasms. As the fit ended, she looked to Seohyun with pleading eyes. "Seo…"

At the sound of her tone, it was almost as if she had already said the words. Seohyun’s eyes widened and she shook her head vigorously, more tears pouring down. Almost deliriously, she cried out, “No, no, no, no, no.” 

"Please. You have to." Ellin’s back arched, a scream escaping her lips. "Seohyun, please! It hurts." 

Seohyun’s continued to cry, but she reached a shaky hand to the holster around her waist to pull out the fully loaded gun. Upon seeing the gun, Ellin closed her eyes and squeezed Seohyun’s hand with the last of her strength. Seohyun forced herself to get up, and did exactly what she was taught.

Cock the gun.

Aim at head.

Pull the trigger.
