The Little Magazine Collection includes a number of literary magazines published by creative writing students and faculty in programs across the United States and beyond. Yet it also includes zines. What’s the difference between a little mag and a zine? We recently spoke with a cataloger about this very topic and concluded that the categories are a bit blurry. Generally speaking, though, a zine may reflect a homemade quality, such as incorporating photocopied images or typewritten or handwritten text, and/or take an ant-establishment attitude. In other words, the creative work isn’t trying to appeal to gatekeepers but to find its way directly into the hands of readers.
With that spirit in mind, and given that not just one but two (!) local zine fests are happening this month, we’re celebrating zines within the Little Magazine Collection with this photo collage. You can meet the writers and artists behind some of the zines pictured here at Milwaukee Zine Fest X April 7 at Milwaukee Public Library’s Central Library and at Madison Print & Resist April 28 at Madison Public Library’s Central Library.
