Excited to start sharing information about participants for PrintCamp 2018 (June 2 - 10) at Printmakers Open Forum! In alphabetical order by last name...First up, Katie Baldwin @katieameliabaldwin On her work: My work investigates text, image, and the way in which narratives are built. I am interested in making work by hand: blocks are carved, inked up and hand- pulled. My images utilize a compositional structure such as inverted point of view, as well as defiance of scale, proportions and time. In this way, the work challenges the unity of time by showing several moments at once. I reveal the interior and exterior of both man-made and natural environments. Mountains, rivers, cages, or bridges become the manufactured stages on which complex narratives play out. What she will be doing at PrintCamp: At Print Camp, I would like to use the time to extend my skills and knowledge in etching. I propose to work on a series of 5 images. I would develop the plates and proof during Print Camp. Final editions would be printed after Print Camp in my own studio. Print Camp is an opportunity for me to focus on my own work in etching within a small community of artists. I believe that your (Shelley's) expertise will give me the knowledge I seek to create a new series of works in etching. Pleased to share PrintCamp 2018 (June 2 - 10) at Printmakers Open Forum participant info - In alphabetical order by last name...Next up Jennifer Manzella Website: http://www.jlmanzella.net/ On her work: Working mainly in print media and drawing, I create artwork that recalls landscape tied in with the idea of place, home and shelter. These images are often constructions from actual places in my past travels as well as found images that have been transformed through various drawing and printmaking processes. What she will be doing at PrintCamp: Lately I’ve been more interested in layering imagery I’ve been using transparent base in my relief inks with multiple block processes and monoprints. What I’m really interested in working on at Print Camp is learning how to better integrate a few processes into a single series. For Print Camp my focus wouldbe about combining relief, screen printing and possibly a litho process. I’m very comfortable in relief and screen printing at this point butit would be great to add a process such as lithography. I have a lot of experience as an artist and an educator, I’ve been teaching printmaking, foundations and drawing classes for over 10 years so I have plenty of experience but I’m really eager to learn from others. I’ve done a few residencies (Haystack) in the past and worked out of other professional print studios (Lower East Side Print Shop, Zea Mays) and I always learn so much when I work closely with other artists in these intensive settings. I am really good at working around others and enjoy the communal environment of printmaking studios. Plus I really like camping! Skill Share Presentation at PrintCamp: I would love to share an on-going project that I’ve been working on for the past year. Currently I’m working on a series of tiny copper etchings that are influenced by abandoned and empty building lots in the city of Philadelphia. The city has changed drastically since I had lived here fifteen years ago. I’ve been observing how the influx of people moving from other places along with the real estate market has shifted the poverty line in an ever-changing game of gentrification. My interest lies in recording this shift. Some of these lots have been cared for and have become green spaces within these marginal neighborhoods while other lots are representative of years of neglect. My plan is to create 100 of these small etchings inspired by an exhibition of small Rembrandt etchings I saw a few years ago at the Georgia Museum of Art. I could discuss my process and technique behind this series. Next up, Pleased to announce PrintCamp 2018 participant, Ann Piper On her work: I'd like to work with monoprints/monotypes, mostly. At a previous residency/WSW session, I used a trace monotype method to create the ground for an etching on copper. I would like to continue to experiment with this, in addition to making traditional monotypes. What she will be doing at PrintCamp: The imagery I am currently working with in the studio deals with the figure in \"mindscapes.\" (i.e. Nightmare with Hairdo (#1 in images) I would like to push my ideas in this vein by exploring the imagery in conjunction with the printmaking process. l'd make many different variations for each mindscape, layering the surface with multiple passes through the press, and allowing the freedom of uncertainty to expand the possibilities for new compositions and idea overlap. I have been a participant in at least five residencies, both long and short term, and I have always found the experience to be incredibly energizing. I try to bring as much positive energy and enthusiasm as I can to each residency, in order to help foster a good group dynamic. Hello again! Very happy to share PrintCamp 2018 (June 2 - 10) at Printmakers Open Forum participant info -  In alphabetical order by last name...Next up Sarah McDermott aka ChemLawn Website: www.thekidneypress.com On her work:  My work centers on issues of power, exploring relations of diminamce between different groups of people, and between people and their environment. Human interactions are necessarily filled with disorder and struggle; I observe and interpret the ways that people try to create order, with varying degrees of permanence, by manipulating and defining space within a built environment. I explore how these human geopgraphies manifest in our psychology and embodiment, through our perception of space and how we navigate it. I'm currently taking first steps with imagery around a series of concepts related to industrial history where I am living in West Virginia, and trying to be open about what form they will ultimately take. I teach in a printmaking program, so I teach a little bit of everything, but I am way more experienced with letterpress and relief printing and screen printing, which I use extensively in my own work.  What she will be doing at PrintCamp: I would like to expand my general knowledge of intaglio. Namely: -Expanding the kinds of marks I can make on the plate, experimenting with sugar lift, spit bite and other techniques.  -I want to experiment with using acrylic grounds, such as with the Montana and Molotov inks, in an effort to potentially (depending on how it works) move in a more non-toxic direction. -I want to try to etch on different types of paper and to experiment more with integrating etching into book arts. -I would also like to reinforce my knowledge about studio setup for acid baths etc.   I would also like to experiment more with chine colle and with combining media.    I like the way this is set up as sharing skills among practicing artists. I view printmaking as grounded in various traditions but also constantly changing- I am very open to trying new things, and I try to avoid fetishizing skills and tools. That said I love learning new skills/technique/craft and enjoy doing so in a less hierarchical manner than with many traditional schools. I have good communication skills, I'm good at sharing space, and I have a sense of humor.
