ELIZABETH CASTALDO
ON HER WORK:
I work in mixed media, combining collage, drawing, and printmaking to create works on paper and artist’s books that explore the connection of feminine sensuality to nature and its manifestations in modern culture. I work with themes such at generation, growth, sexuality, entropy and decay. I am inspired by the structural patterns inherent in plant and animal life that reveal an undeniable connection between humans and the natural universe. My compositions become multi-layered worlds filled with motifs inspired by human anatomy, plant structures, and geometry. A key theme throughout the work is the resilience of living things and the ability for adaptation, despite a natural tendency toward disorder.
I recently wrapped up a yearlong residency at The Center For Book Arts where I focused on making artists books reflecting on my personal connection with nature as well as conservation, community and preservation of the natural world for future generations.
My work is process driven and each stage of the work is a reaction that is informed by the work that preceded. I work with pattern and layering, building up layers of hand drawn patterns, watercolor washes, original prints, collage, and appropriated imagery. Printmaking and multiples are central parts of my art practice and I am passionate about creating unique handmade art with a foundation in the practice and theory of printmaking. The layering involved in collage, printmaking and bookmaking provides the opportunity for concealment, excavation, and revelation.
WHAT SHE WILL BE DOING AT PRINTCAMP:
I hope to focus on experimenting with intaglio and lithography, figuring out how these techniques can fit within my studio practice. I would like to experiment with approaches to each process but ultimately move towards combining them with one another as well as other media. My goal for the week would be to come out with a small series of prints with a longer term goal of setting a foundation for making further work and more advanced use.
SKILLSHARE:
I would love to do a book making demo, perhaps a quick non-adhesive accordion or other quick structure that would be interesting to folks.

ON HER WORK:
My work is a reflection of what I see within this world and how my mind transforms it. In my everyday life, I correlate the past with the present, which bridges the connection between my mind and physical self. My life is a constant struggle of working through the past and wandering through the present. I often find myself alone, consumed with my thoughts, emotions, and memories. Through the struggles of life, I learn and grow by translating this process onto paper.
I pull from both my past and present experiences, and layout onto paper my world, my thoughts and my feelings. Translating my physical and mental emotions, I extract shapes, patterns, and colors as visual metaphors. I work to create a language of communication through the use of physical and visual objects as they relate to the physical body and the emotional process of my mind’s thoughts and development.
My work is completed in layers, building up my surfaces layer-by-layer. Each layer is defined with color, using shapes and patterns to form each layer. As the layers come together they form imperfections, creating gaps, spaces and jagged edges that represent the realities of life. Living in a world where nothing is perfect I struggle to hold myself together. Through this analytical process of breaking the image down into layers and color, I pull not only the image together but also myself.
Recently, my work has been focused on the movement of water, both on the surface and underneath. I am challenging myself to connect with the movement and sounds it makes both mentally, physically and emotionally. As a swimmer, I hid my emotions in the pool, now I aim to use water to portray my emotions more openly. As well water is a reflective device that gives way when manipulated. In my upcoming works, I am planning to use floating and moving objects, such as the physical body, and portray what it does to the surface of water.
WHAT SHE WILL BE DOING AT PRINTCAMP:
I am hoping to develop a series of images with hand-drawn hands and feet manipulating water. The water would be displayed through the use of pattern that has been manipulated by the computer and screen printed on matboard to make collagraph plates. Drawings of hands and feet will be added using litho – stone or photo. As well I would be interested in working on a large 18” x 24” intaglio with sugarlift.
SKILLSHARE:
I would be happy to give a demo on using screen printing on mat board or other surfaces to create collagraph plates. I have also been using a sugar lift solution to screen print on copper. I have been aquatinting it and layering it on the surface of the plate.

WEBSITE :

ON HER WORK:
Through print media, I examine continual growth and transformation. Blending of complimentary colors creates the muddy area where we find ourselves during change, and in spaces which might not make sense or paths that cease to continue. I strip away any excess mark-making, leaving the viewer with a raw, saturated feeling of change and an uncertain, but ever present optimism.
Transformation, a formal representation within my work, presents itself through the layering of embossment, folding, and blending. I use the grid as a formal element in which to abstract further. My emotional charge and human connection come from the smaller pieces which make up the grid. I make aesthetic choices on when and how the prints within the grid can and will match up. These choices echo the seamless, and confusing, ways in which we navigate our surroundings while chartering unmarked territory.
The simultaneity of meaning and experience, and the relationship between form and method become of paramount importance within the work and the shapes themselves. The action of folding leaves a memory of how I have created each line in each piece. The fold breaks the paper free from any boundary a frame would represent, and brings the work into the space of the viewer. Three dimensionality increases empathy by showing both or all sides of the work, and opens up the possibility of notions beyond itself.
WHAT SHE WILL BE DOING AT PRINTCAMP:
My goal for print camp is to experiment with the mixing of collagraph and lithography while conceptually considering the weight of wishes or hopes, and how these intangible premonitions become considerable factors in our visceral reality. I plan to do this with the use of the arch, the shape of the keystone, multiple blended colors, and carborundum grit mixed with shellac.
SKILLSHARE: Her fabulous blend rolls!

CLAUDIA FIEO

ON HER WORK:
The persistent touchstones in my work have always been nature and natural forms; my artistic work lives in the crevices between recognizing the devastation our species has wrought and seeking to reconcile humankind with the earth from which we've sprung. Given the changing climate, I feel an even more urgent need to underscore the cultural and spiritual significance of Nature in our lives.
I also would greatly appreciate the camaraderie and conversation among printmakers, as I am eager to learn new ways of doing things that might better my artistic practice. I look forward to responding to new landscapes and sources of inspiration within the natural world, I would like to devote my time at Print Camp to develop printed backgrounds on Asian papers, to provide some grounding, and aspects of continuity in my artistic vision within a new body of work, which I hope to continue developing over the course of my sabbatical time frame.
The printmaking studio is where I can revel in the unexpected, in the interplay of marks and motifs, strata of information printed over time and in different locations, attempting to give fullest expression to my ideas as I reach for those tantalizing, ethereal glimpses of universal truths.
WHAT THEY WILL BE DOING AT PRINTCAMP2019:
I would like to explore a combination of techniques, including non-etch intaglio techniques, monotype, relief and pochoir on Asian papers, that would be compatible with over-printing strata of information for future collaged prints. If there were time and space, I would greatly enjoy learning more about how to incorporate screen printing into my work, would be compatible with over-printing strata of information for future collaged prints.
I am well-versed in several techniques, but I need more experimentation using Asian papers, registration methods for layering different media. I would also appreciate advice on best practices for streamlining materials to accommodate printmaking while traveling.
SKILLSHARE: I could demonstrate how to employ stencils (either laser-cut, vinyl-cut, or hand-cut to create a collagraph plate with “screenprinted” carborundum gel or how to construct silk organza collagraph plates in addition to found material collagraph plates; how to develop a series of prints using pochoir monoprinting techniques. I could also show a PowerPoint presentation of how I developed a cohesive body of work from a series of related collagraph plates using four printed colors on pre-stained papers.

IAN COLWELL
ABOUT THEIR WORK:
I was born in the year 1998 in Poughkeepsie, New York. In 2003 my parents separated, which resulted in 14 years of various events of trauma that has inadvertently impacted my identity. This had to lead me to begin to question my self-image at an early age. I didn't quite fit into any group or find anything I excelled at. In order to cope with that trauma, I found that making art was therapeutic and helped boost my self-esteem. As a teenager, I started to feel estranged from my friends and peers, feeling like I could not identify or relate to their experiences but I never could understand why. Feeling isolated from my environment, I was keen on leaving New York. Coming to Portland, Maine, to attend college it was a very liberal climate in terms of politics than what I was used to. I made a crucial connection to my identity during college orientation, learning that there are different pronouns that people can be referred to, such as “they/them/theirs”. Constantly challenging my image before, I felt immediately connected to not conforming to the gender binary. Through the use of Printmaking as a way to educate others and myself, I started to investigate into my gender identity through the use of print, a very fluid and democratic medium used to make multiple images. Being able to take up space, and be outspoken with my work to show that identifying as gender nonconforming is a normal and conventional way of living. By fragmenting and screenprinting images of my own body I act as both Dr. Frankenstein and the so-called “creature” through the use of digital and physical means. I am re-composing images of my own body to claim ownership over my own body as a genderless being.
WHAT THEY WILL BE DOING AT PRINTCAMP:
At Printcamp I would continue to explore this investigation of self through the use of print and print media. Currently, my work has been constructed through printmaking techniques. At Printcamp I am hoping to strengthen my skills as a printmaker, and hopefully learn some new techniques.
SKILLSHARE: I would like to share my zines concerning gender identity

ABOUT HER WORK:
The surface of the body acts as a barrier between our internal and external selves exposing the vulnerabilities between mind and body. As fragile and receptive beings, the past builds up and manifests itself through our daily actions and repetitive tendencies. Constant awareness of our physical forms and emotional states are visually impressed upon us. There is a strong desire to control our appearance and physical signs of well-being. The length one will go, to appear well and put together intrigues me. These preconceived expectations of self, become overwhelming, and the focus of our obsessive dwelling.
The presence of the body is suggested in these pieces, through various processes that reflect healing and destructive patterns. Veiled pieces are mended meticulously by hand, creating another skin. Etched impressions on copper are abstracted and deteriorated. Surfaces are abraded; etched; mended, and covered. These act to highlight the subtle and startling effects of our physical movements, mental states, and overall health.
