Using the plastic body to provide a protective cover around the flash tube and only add a glass diffusor to the very front edge of the lighting path poses several problems. First, #illumination is not uniform; due to the design, light can only exit on a flat plane in the front and thus is unable to provide wraparound lighting inside or against a #modifier. Most modifiers are indeed designed to #concentrate and diffuse #light for unique lighting characteristics, so only shooting light into their center illiminates these features and creates a totally different output. Secondly, the #glass dome is used for two functions: it helps to avoid hotspots, and it provides protection in case the bulb fails.
