@ieatfrogs69 submitted: Any idea who this poor fellow is? I can’t imagine he’s got many identifying features at this age but any ideas would be appreciated!! My friends and I were camping at the Yuba river north of Sacramento, Ca and were splitting a log for firewood and this dude popped out. I tried putting him into a crack in some other old hardwood so fingers crossed he could continue munching on that. Thank you!!
What a large and precious child! It’s a longhorn beetle larva. Couldn’t tell you which species at this stage. Although given the size, I’d lean towards Prioninae, something like a California root borer, which are common there. Hope this dude managed to tunnel back in and can successfully turn into a big, awesome beetle later!
