“Don’t you dare throw that snowba-, goddammit!”
Wanda giggled as Natasha brushed the snow out of her hair, muttering promises of retribution.
“I think you’re going soft,” Wanda called out from her position behind the overly elaborate snow fort (because Steve “even-a-snow-day-can-be-a-training-exercise” Rogers never did anything halfway, damn him). Natasha did not like the snow, she did not like the cold, and someone had stolen her winter coat from the common area.
“Overconfidence has been the downfall of many a junior agent,” Natasha replied from the center of the designated no-man’s-land, pitching three perfectly round snowballs with deadly accuracy. The first knocked Clint from his perch atop the fort, the second hit Steve in the center of his chest, right where the star would be if he were in uniform, and the third soared toward Wanda in a perfect line, only to be deflected by a burst of red energy.
Behind her, Rhodey called for a foul–all powers had been banned for this particular exercise–but Natasha barely noticed. Instead, she stepped closer, her fists clenched. The shower of sparks from Wanda’s block had opened a space in the wall of the snow fort, and–
Wanda ducked behind a higher portion of the wall with a gasp, but the damage was done.
Natasha scrambled up the steep side of the snow fort, bare hands aching from the cold. Wanda stumbled back, eyes wide, and began stammering excuses. “I–I couldn’t find mine, and Clint said it was okay, and–”
Natasha came to a stop at the top of the fort and tilted her head to one side, expression entirely guileless. “Oh. Well, I guess it’s okay, then.”
Wanda grinned. “Oh, good.”
Natasha rolled her eyes and lunged forward, knocking Wanda off-balance with a single shove. She swore loudly in Sokovian and rolled down the front of the fort. Natasha slid down after her, standing upright, and landed right by her head.
“What did I say about overconfidence?” Natasha said, her lips quirked up in a smile at the amount of snow in Wanda’s hair.
