just want to say I really love your art, I’m glad you do timezone rb’s because sometimes I feel like I miss when you post! it’s really inspiring to see how consistent you are, consistency is something I really struggle with so I admire it a lot. your style is so detailed in a subtle way, it’s really wonderful to study it for a while and pick apart all of the little parts that make it beautiful. thank you for sharing your pieces with us!!
thank you very much, glad to hear you like my work! also good to know the timezone rbs aren't annoying haha, i often finish stuff at like. 10pm pacific time on weekdays. when most of the world is snoozing and not on tumblr
re: tma being gothic, I feel like an argument could totally be made (and I would be thrilled to read that paper) but at the same time a lot of gothic literature engages more with surreal beauty and environment than tma usually does - in classic gothic literature there’s typically that good Romantic juice thrown in that I’d argue a lot of the more realistic setting of tma doesn’t generally include (this is just my take, but i love these concepts discussed together!!)
OOOH okay that makes a lot of sense!! I'm glad you brought up the environmental factor bc I was mostly considering the supernatural elements and the kind of vaguely sublime-adjacent elements of tma (I feel like the concept of the sublime is relatively present in the vast statements to me which is SO fun) but that's definitely a super important factor. And you're right, surreal beauty doesn't seem very present, especially in the episode I'm focusing on.
Luckily whether or not tma is gothic is a relatively minor point in my paper (it would just be a nice tie-in to make it more cohesive and boost my word count) so I can probably get away with calling it gothic-adjacent I think?? The fact that you feel like there can be an argument for it is perfect, arguments are all I've got :)
for prompts - do a scene with rain!
"I knew a boy who used to fill up his fish bowl with rain water."
They are sitting on a crumbling edge, same wear and rubble beneath their hands that've been there for decades, and a plastic canopy buffers away the drizzle over Gotham. Soft moonlight filters through stone clouds, and for one, impossible moment, the city is beautiful and bathed in sheets of glowing pearls that roll against the gray walls and dimming streets.
"Why'd he do that?"
The air is heavy, a weight to rest inside tired lungs that ache for something a little lighter. Water trickles down from the aged tarp, dripping soft sighs onto their heads, slowly pulled through their hair and down the sides of their ears to collect in the divets of their shoulders. It looks like crying from the side, simple and sweet as rain always is.
"His family couldn't afford clean water, at least none good enough for a fish to live in. He found one of those small, minnow looking things in a puddle outside his apartment and decided it was his pet. He carried it around in a cup for about a day, showed it to me, too, all proud. Named it Sal."
"Sal? For a fish?"
“Yeah.”
Hilled thunder shakes the sky, a subtle lashing against black asphalt that mutates forgotten oil into something briefly pure and worldly.
Their jackets are soaked, consistent, steady drips pushing through fabric and pooling onto skin. The water is cold and delicate, like a breath in winter air. The world sighs and another shower descends, twinkling stars falling down into Gotham.
"What happened to them?"
"The kid eventually found an old tank in one of the bins. A couple of cracks in it, but it did the job. Like I said, they couldn't afford to really give water the fish could live in, but the kid figured rain water was good enough." The clouds move, and it is one of those rare nights where the moon refuses to. It is full and it is gracing them with all its light. It gleams in their eyes, something wistful collecting into their already heavy lungs. "Every time it rained, I'd see that kid run outside and place the tank in front of his door, watching it from his window and waiting for it to fill up. It never did, but, god, did that kid try. He really did.”
The cycle curls, gray coiling into smog filtered mist, and Gotham lights return with neon glory and loud vindictiveness. Here, above it all, they cling to the fading white noise, straining to catch the tender slips and spills to carry home and keep beside their pillow to sleep.
“And the fish?”
“Dunno.” It is not often the city is so loving, so sweet. “I guess it died.”
consider this me yelling (enthusiastic) at you about the right where you are fic. was blindsided by sudden sasha and wilde emotions and hold you fully responsible
hehehehe. i did it for you prism! i am always experiencing sasha and wilde emotions and I needed to unleash them upon the general public
(If you don’t know what we’re talking about, you should read my new fic)
9, 10, & 18 for midnights in october?
I'm gonna be such a let-down for 9 & 10 because I don't remember any specific writing from it at all. Like I remember what happens but not what I wrote.
18, however. Were there any alternate versions of this fic?
Believe it or not, it was gonna be canon divergence AU. I was gonna have Sasha come back, I think? Like really early on when I was dayrdreaming up the fic, but I scrapped that idea pretty quick.
But then they were gonna stay on the Faroe Islands for a lot longer and accidentally adopt a cat and there was gonna be a dramatic scene where Zolf returns his driftwood dolphin to the ocean .Oh, geez, I think Wilde wasn't going to forget Frozen-style his afterlife chat with Zolf and they were gonna have to talk about it, but then I went against that.
But yeah, nothing majorly different was gonna happen once I actually got underway with it

🔮 - Do you believe in the paranatural/supernatural IRL? Wow, heavy question, right of the bat. I...don't know? Depends on what it is, I think. Do I believe in ghosts? ...I think so? I and some other friends have had some really weird experiences that's hard to explain. Do I believe in cryptids? Some of em- considering how little we really know about deep sea life, is that hard to believe that there's some creatures that have just managed to stay hidden away, in the deep parts of the world? Not fantastical by any means, just...clever, secretive animals. I can believe that. There's a lot of stuff I don't believe in, but all the same, I'm not gonna mess with it, just in case, because what you don't believe in can ruin your day. control ask game

send me a number from 1-37 and i’ll copy/paste whatever fic prompt/idea corresponds to that number in my spreadsheet!
Jon and Gerry are childhood friends; they bond over their hatred for Leitners and just some cute lil childhood interactions
i came up with this prompt for gerry week and never got around to writing it! (i’ve tried to sneak a childhood friends au into every prompt week i’ve done so far and it’s never worked out ;__;)
