Inside America’s Toughest Federal Prison
Read the article here.
Be warned, it’s pretty horrifying.
Other states tried, but quickly abandoned, the so-called Pennsylvania System, and an 1890 Supreme Court ruling against the use of solitary on Colorado’s death row noted that “a considerable number of the prisoners fell, after even a short confinement, into a semifatuous condition, from which it was next to impossible to arouse them, and others became violently insane; others still, committed suicide, while those who stood the ordeal better were not generally reformed.”
And yet they continue to use solitary confinement on prisoners who probably shouldn’t be in ADX (or similar maximum security prisons). They use it as punishment still in some lower security prisons too. Those profiled here ended up in ADX due to a confluence of bullshit, and it literally drove them insane. It’s so cruel and unnecessary.
