Sirius gulped his whiskey and put down the glass. He glanced at Lupin with an odd expression on his face. Then, as if to return Lupin’s corporeal confession, Sirius tapped the buttons of his nightshirt open with his wand. The halves of the shirt parted to reveal a circular weal on the skin near his left ventricle, as if a large fluke or leech had been applied there. Lupin’s eyes brimmed with horror as he recognized the size and shape of the weal.
‘That – that looks like the dementor’s k-kiss,’ he said, the words barely escaping his throat.
Sirius nodded and replied, ‘If they latch on your skin, they are able to draw more memories. They … I think they misunderstood the terms of our agreement. They began to visit me in droves every two or three hours. I glutted them with memories of Marlene, the Marauders, you and me, Harry and Lena, Regulus, every single bittersweet thing I possessed. I don’t think any of the other prisoners have this mark on them. Then again, none of them ever escaped,’ he added proudly.
