‘Kreacher!’ they heard Sirius’s voice echo from the staircase as he descended, ‘Who you talking to? I told you not to speak to mother. It only agitates her.’
‘Kreacher isn’t Master, I swear I isn’t. The half-breed is in the scullery. Says he has a meeting with you.’
‘Me,’ Lupin rose and faced Sirius.
Sirius stopped dead in his tracks. 'What was the last thing I said to you before I went to Godric’s Hollow that night?’ Sirius asked Lupin gruffly.
“I need to sort something out with Prongs. Don’t wait up,” Lupin repeated with solemnity.
Sirius took a step forward towards Lupin now that he had ascertained it was really him, then he took one back remaining cautious.
‘What’re you doing here?’
‘Dumbledore sent a message we’re meeting here tonight?’
‘The Order? Nah, that’s next week.’
Lupin retrieved a piece of parchment from his robes and perused it. Then, brought it over to Sirius.
Sirius waved his wand, and another piece of parchment flew from the corner of the house into his palm.
Lupin looked puzzled, then made as if to leave.
‘Where you going?’ Sirius asked.
‘Back. Dumbledore must have made a mistake. See you next week then.’
‘Dumbledore never makes mistakes,’ Sirius said shrewdly, ‘it seems he wants us to be ‘friends’ again.’
‘Nasty beasts and half-breeds. Oh, what my Mistress would say if she saw the company Master keeps in her house,’ Kreacher murmured from below the table.
‘Out with you!’ Sirius shouted and Kreacher scurried into his nest under the boiler.
‘Be nice. You’re all he has,’ Lupin told him sternly.
‘Yes, and what a wonderful feeling that is,’ Sirius replied, parting the long dark hair from his forehead gloomily and taking a chair. ‘Sit,’ he said to Lupin, who still stood tentatively in the doorway.
