Go To Jail
See the small opening in this tree? Would you imagine that is an unpleasant place to spend the night?
This is the Boab Prison Tree, one of several found in Western Australia’s Kimberley Region. This tree is a whopping 14 meters in circumference, so it’s literally the size of a room. The trees used as prison trees are about a day’s walk from nearby cities and near fresh water supplies, so law enforcement escorting prisoners would often stop here and use the inside of the tree as a secure holding cell for prisoners while they rested. The tree is a classic Australia Boab tree. Like many of this species, it is estimated to be up to 1500 years old. This tree had a variety of additional uses for the aboriginal peoples, including shelter and for food.
