Corruption in South Africa dates back to colonisation in 1652. Jan van Riebeeck, the Dutch East India company employee who was sent to colonise the Cape, got the job because he was given a second chance after he was fired for ignoring the company ban on using his office to pursue personal financial interests. The period of Dutch rule he began, which lasted until 1795, was marked by tax evasion and corruption by public officials. Under British rule, which followed that of the Dutch, public spending was directed to serve private interests. The most prominent colonialist of the time, Cecil John Rhodes, was forced to resign after he gave a friend an 18-year monopoly catering contract for the government-run railways.

Paul Kruger’s Transvaal Republic, the Afrikaner-governed state against which the British fought at the turn of the century, was riddled with nepotism and economic favours for the connected. The British administration which replaced it served the interests of mine owners on whom it bestowed special privileges. What today is called “state capture”, the use of the state to serve private interests, was common to Afrikaner and British rule. Given this history, it is not surprising that corruption was a constant feature of the apartheid period. Black people were its chief victims, since they had no rights and so no way of protecting themselves against abuse. The most corrupt period in the country’s history was the last few years of apartheid, when the attempt to combat the successful international sanctions campaign made corruption, protected by government secrecy, the core government strategy. This was often done with the collusion of private businesses.

Media Integrity: Healthcare

The for-profit media industry has a conflict of interest. Their business model relies on generating revenue through private interests via advertising. They aren’t capable of doing their job with full journalistic integrity while the success of their business is tied to the success of other industries. They aren’t beholden to people to the same degree that they’re beholden to corporate advertisers. Media interests align more closely with private interests than public interests. The media represents capital class interests and pretends that’s the same thing as representing human interests. Breaking News: It’s not.

Take a look at their profit structure. The majority of ad revenue generated by the media comes from the healthcare industry. Just turn on the TV. Insurance & pharma ads are plastered in every commercial break. $10s of billions per year to drive $10s of billions in profits for CEOs & investors at the expense of our health. Do we really believe that has no impact on the media’s willingness to engage a sustained, in-depth exploration around healthcare as a human right? Their financial interests are intertwined. The media doesn’t reveal that their anti-universal healthcare pundits & guests are *always* on the payroll of insurance & pharma companies. We then internalize & repeat their lines of propaganda.

“How are we going to pay for it?” is a false narrative spread by the private healthcare industry with the assistance of the entire for-profit media industry. Paying for it is easy when we remove the profiteering. The inventor of insulin sold the patent for $1 because he believed a life saving drug shouldn’t be denied to anyone. People are dying in the US right now rationing insulin because they can’t afford it. Same with the opioid crisis. After knowingly creating an addiction that’s ruined millions of lives, OxyContin & the Sacklers aren’t facing criminal charges, they get to keep their bloody fortune, they get to stay in business AND they’ve just been awarded the patent for opioid therapy. None of it makes sense. Unless, of course, you follow the money. The only reason everything costs so much is because the business structure of these industries are centered around driving profits instead of health. There’s little emphasis on preventative medicine & cures - the crux of our healthcare industry is how much profit can be generated out of each patient’s lifetime.

There’s an unnecessary accumulation of wealth that goes directly into the pockets of a few individuals rather than the greater social good, all for the sake of concentrating power in favor of creating monopolies and reducing consumer market power. The removal of that profiteering will impact the profitability of the entire media industry ... as it should.

This is just one angle of the propaganda & lack of integrity across our major media sources.

It’s time we begin reaching consensus around the depths of corruption in mass media.
