DOF KV AOLF TVBYU? DOF KV AOLF JYF? KV AOLF UVA ZLL P OHCL NPCLU BUAV AOLT MYLLKVT?
while making my clan generator and ensuring that it worked before publishing, i generated a Dude. his name? privetstar. his description? a black tabby tom with no eyes.
immediately i was captivated. so here he is… privetstar.
privet was born with no eyes, a rare condition called anophthalmia. though he appears quite serious in this artwork, he’s actually a fun-loving guy! his favorite job is being a mentor. he loves bad jokes and fantastical stories, and can often be found telling long epics to a crowd of enchanted kits.
Name: Privetstar Counterpart: Warden Walker Clan: WindClan
Changes from Tallstar’s Revenge
Just a warning to anyone who hits read more; these changes, in google docs, go on for eight pages. I don’t know why I went so nuts with this book in particular... but I did. It’s done and I have no regrets.
Instead of being negligent to Privetkit, Magpiepelt is overprotective in her depression. She still lets Privetkit have freedom but she freaks out over anything that causes him to become upset or cry. This includes Privetkit’s first attempt tunneling when Privetkit’s tiny tunnel collapses on him. While he was scared by the experience, Magpiepelt’s frightened response made him that much more afraid.
Later that evening, Magpiepelt and Sandstone have a conversation. Magpiepelt is very upset that Sandstone would have their son practice tunneling when he's so young. Tunneling can be dangerous for grown cats and her paranoia has her concerned that Privetkit could have been hurt. Sandstone thinks she's overreacting but does agree that he rushed this moment. After Finchkit died, Sandstone became a bit clingy of his family and wants to teach Privetkit as soon as possible so he can be prepared as he can't face the thought of losing his son as well. Palebird is understanding and they agree to wait for Privetkit to be apprenticed to teach him such things. Kithood should be a time for fun and games.
Privetkit falls into a daily routine. He plays with Shrewkit and Beechkit every day and develops a healthy rivalry with Shrewkit, who sees Privetkit as a younger brother. He spends every evening playing with Sandstone; Sandstone is very careful to choose games that help grow Privetkit’s tunneler muscles. He then falls asleep each night to Magpiepelt telling him stories.
Heatherstar is still incredibly biased but she does honor her word to give the tunnelers some apprentices. Her ratio is about two to one. As Privetkit was the only cat is his litter to survive and the tunnelers are very upset, Heatherstar makes him a tunneler out of fear of a rebellion.
Sandstone is Privetpaw's mentor. While it is not advised parents mentor their kits, Heatherstar was worried about how Sandstone’s work ethic would be affected if he was distracted by Privetpaw’s absence. With how eager he was to teach Privetpaw himself as a kit, she figured the job was in safe paws.
Privetpaw hates tunneling and falls into somewhat of a depression without being able to run free or feel the wind in his fur. However, he is strong and a natural at tunneling. Although he hates it, he believes Heatherstar assigned him here because she knew he'd be skilled rather than for her own political security. Believing this, he doesn't say a word about his discomfort.
Magpiepelt returns to work, albeit a tad slowly. Six moons in the nursery and her depression have left her energy levels at an all-time low and she needs to work her way back up.
The loners come about a moon or two into Privetpaw’s training. Tallpaw takes notice of Sparrow; the tom seems to be studying everything with rapt interest and is eavesdropping on many of the clan cat’s conversations. This strikes Privetpaw as being very suspicious but thinks that Sparrow may just be an odd cat; after all, the tom hardly speaks to anyone except for a short talk with Sandstone at the edge of camp.
Privetpaw pesters Shrewpaw with questions about moor runner training. Sensing something is wrong, Shrewpaw gets Privetpaw to open up. He is sympathetic and offers to teach Privetpaw in secret at night if it'll help him feel better. Both know it's not a solution that will last but they see no way to change Heatherstar’s mind.
During one of their nightly sessions, Privetpaw and Shrewpaw see Sparrow heading for a tunnel. Not wanting to be caught, they continue training until they realize Sparrow has been underground for some time and may be lost. Shrewpaw heads back to bed as he can't navigate the tunnels while Privetpaw retrieves Sparrow. Sparrow had been a fair way inside and seemed to have been digging. Privetpaw plans on telling Sandstone the next day and leads Sparrow back to camp.
By the time Privetpaw is awake the next day, Sandstone and Sparrow are gone and Heatherstar assigns Privetpaw to a moor runner hunting patrol. Most of the warriors are unsure about this but Heatherstar argues that all cats need to be able to hunt above ground in case the prey ever runs particularly thin. The tunnelers take this as another attempt to slowly faze them out.
Privetpaw has just returned with a fat rabbit. While he is aware that it's due to Shrewpaw’s training, the warriors think he is a natural. Even the tunnelers are considering if Privetpaw should change paths if he was able to hunt this well on his first try.
Sparrow returns to camp, telling everyone about the cave in and Sandstone’s death. This is met with a mixed response. While the moor runners believe Sparrow, the tunnelers are suspicious of foul play. Sandstone had informed multiple cats that he was taking Sparrow to the oldest and, usually, safest tunnel in the territory, as Sparrow had asked for a tour of the underground.
It had been a rather rainy season and there were a couple veins in that tunnel that may have been weakened because of it. However, the tunnelers are sure that the tunnel would have held unless it was tampered with.
Privetpaw becomes convinced by their argument that his father was murdered and informs the clan about what he had seen the night before. Sparrow admits he went into the tunnel and dug but he has no idea if he damaged the tunnel by doing so.
The clan becomes outraged. Those who don't view this as murder still see it as a loner causing the death of a clan cat by poking his nose where it doesn't belong. Heatherstar refuses to punish Sparrow for murder since nobody has definitive proof and sends the loners on their way. She implies that they may only return after Sparrow passes away.
A few days after the loners leave, Heatherstar gets rid of tunneling. Privetpaw and the other tunnelers are outraged. They argue the only reason so many cave ins have happened in the last few seasons is because of the very rainy seasons they've had. Privetpaw in particular is outraged; while he hates tunneling, he had been close to Sandstone and he knew his father was ecstatic for him to become a tunneler.
When it comes time for Privetpaw to have his mandatory trip to the moonstone, Sandstone did not come to see him. Privetpaw took this as a sign of Sandstone's anger and disappointment. In reality, Sandstone had become Finchkit’s primary caretaker after his death. Finchkit had gotten into some mischief and by the time that situation was handled, his son had woken up. Sandstone was crushed he missed such a special moment in his son’s life.
Privetblaze is still set on getting revenge for Sandstone. The clan understands he has Magpiepelt's same sensitivity to depression while also having Sandstone's temper. They try to talk reason with Privetblaze but all he hears is them being condescending.
No cat is shocked when Privetblaze announces he is leaving. Between the stress the tom was under with gaining a stepfather in Sleettail and how he still struggling with his father's passing, most felt it was a long time coming.
Shrewclaw escorts Privetblaze to the end of Windclan territory and asks that Privetblaze be careful. If Sparrow really did commit murder then Privetblaze may be in danger going after him.
Along the way, Privetblaze meets Jake. The travel for two moons together, becoming best friends fast. Privetblaze notices he hasn't enjoyed the company of another cat this much in a long, long time.
Jake disapproves of Privetblaze’s murder plot but rarely speaks up on it. He understands that it's a complicated situation that he doesn't see the entirety of.
They eventually find the loners who welcome them into their group. Sparrow is looking far worse than the last time Privetblaze saw him. Sparrow refuses to look Privetblaze in the eye and mostly speaks in mumbled speech.
The loners are a bit suspicious because of how upset Privetblaze had been when they left but Privetblaze had already seemed unhappy so they think he may have been dissatisfied with clan life.
After spending a couple weeks with the loners, Privetblaze is becoming frustrated. He rarely gets to be alone with Sparrow and the few chances he gets, he takes long enough building his nerve that the chance is lost.
Privetblaze vents to Jake about this and Jake suggests that perhaps Privetblaze just doesn't have it in him to kill a cat in cold blood. He also takes the opportunity to ask the questions he's been wondering for some time. What will killing Sparrow accomplish? It won't bring Sandstone back. How would carrying the weight of a murder on his conscience make him feel any better? Privetblaze gets angry at Jake and walks away to find Sparrow.
Angered from his disagreement with Jake, Privetblaze feels no hesitation this time. He easily pinned Sparrow to the ground and was surprised that Sparrow wasn't attempting to defend himself.
Sparrow explains that he doesn't know if he killed Sandstone or not. He had been fawning over a clan molly and was considering joining the clan to be with her. Knowing he couldn't keep up with the moor runners, he wanted to try his paws at tunneling. He went out that night to practice on his own before having a training session with Sandstone the next day.
Sparrow has blamed himself for the cave in, unsure if his digging harmed the tunnel or not. He is haunted by dreams of that day and says he wouldn't blame Privetblaze for killing him to take revenge.
Privetblaze wasn't sure what he had been expecting. Someone cruel? Someone devious or mad? Perhaps even someone completely indifferent. But whatever he had been expecting to find in Sparrow, it wasn't a cat who was being eaten alive by guilt.
He has Sparrow pinned and he isn't even struggling. Yet, looking at his thin, tattered form, Privetblaze can't bring himself to deliver the final blow. The haunted look in Sparrow’s eyes wasn't something so easily faked.
The loners’ route takes them by Mothermouth every year. They aren't too far from there, so Privetblaze decides he will visit Starclan and seek out his father. Whether or not Sandstone was angry, Privetblaze would get answers.
Jake and Privetblaze move on ahead of the loners to reach Mothermouth. As soon as Privetblaze opens his eyes, Sandstone is waiting for him. Sandstone apologizes profusely for missing Privetblaze’s visit as an apprentice and explains how he has been waiting for his son to return so he can put his concerns to rest.
That tunnel was a disaster waiting to happen. With all the rains they'd been having, the underground stream was going to break through sooner or later. While Sparrow’s digging most likely did hasten the process, it was only a matter of time till that tunnel killed. As they were running for the exit, Sandstone had realized just how much slower Sparrow was and how the other tom would never be able to outrun the flood by himself. Sandstone stopped long enough to grab Sparrow and throw him ahead so that, hopefully, they could both survive. However, as he began to run again, the weakened roof collapsed on him.
At first, Privetblaze is hurt by this. Sandstone had thrown away his chance at survival to save a loner instead of running full speed and coming home to his mate and kit?
Sandstone tells him that those thoughts hadn't occurred to him until after his death. When he realized he had died, he thought he had made the biggest mistake of his life. But in the moment, when someone else's life was in danger, he didn't think twice.
Privetblaze is still unsettled of his father's sacrifice. Sandstone assures him the he doesn't blame Sparrow and asks Privetblaze if he could just run knowing that there was a cat who would certainly die if he did. Privetblaze is unable to answer. Would he be able to put his mother through the pain of losing another kit, even if it meant leaving a clanmate for dead?
He eventually responds that he isn't sure but he now has a better understanding of Sandstone's actions; his father hadn't had time to think deeply about his decision.
The pair talk for hours and Privetblaze even gets to meet little Finchkit. When it comes time for Privetblaze to leave, Sandstone inquires about what his son will do now.
When Privetblaze wakes, Jake is by his side. Privetblaze had been asleep so long that Jake had begun to worry.
Privetblaze tells Jake what Sandstone told him and the two leave Mothermouth. On their way out, they spot the loners. Despite Jake's apprehension- Privetblaze did attempt to kill Sparrow- Privetblaze heads their way.
Sparrow didn't tell anyone of Privetblaze’s attack but the loners are just as suspicious as they were.
Privetblaze tells Sparrow what his father told him and that Sandstone doesn't blame him. Sparrow is taken aback and confused by this but thanks Privetblaze for telling him.
Privetblaze and Jake set off, mainly spending by the day hunting and playing together as a relief from the tension they had been under.
As they lay down that night, Jake inquires about what Privetblaze wants to do now.
Privetblaze is unsure. He had never considered the ‘after’ part of his plan. He supposes he should return to Windclan. He asks Jake to come with him and become a warrior. Jake refuses, citing how he may be able to hunt mice well enough, but he'd never be able to catch a rabbit on the moor. He also doesn't have the fighting spirit of a warrior.
Privetblaze is astonished but comes back quickly saying he’ll become a kittypet to be with Jake. Jake shoots this down, knowing Privetblaze wouldn't be happy.
Jake offers a compromise. They don't need to see each other every moment. There's nothing in the warrior code saying they can't be together so Privetblaze can visit anytime. Jake even promises to come see the moor and Privetblaze's family.
Privetblaze isn't completely happy with this but, now that he's considered it, he can feel a longing to go home. He agrees to visit Jake as often as he can and they begin making their way homes.
After parting ways with Jake at Jake's house, Privetblaze's begins to run. Becoming more and more exhilarated the closer he gets to home, he doesn't stop running until he is looking over his home.
When he reaches camp, he is greeted with a mixed reaction. Magpiepelt races out to him, yowling in relief. She nearly bowls him over and covers her eldest kit in licks; her purrs are so loud that he can barely hear anything his other clanmates are saying. He apologizes for worrying his mother so much while spying two brown kittens peering out from behind Sleettail.
He cheerfully greets the kittens and apologizes for being so harsh on Sleettail. His mother deserved happiness but, at the time, he hadn't been able to see that.
He is bowled over by Shrewclaw and Beechsight, who are overjoyed to see their other brother is okay. Privetblaze notices Orchidshadow is pregnant and hanging behind Shrewclaw.
He notices most of the clan is there but there are a few cats missing.
It is revealed that the missing cats- Cloudbreeze, Hareflight, and Brackenwing- were all killed by a dog that has been troubling the territories. With no trees to climb or places to hide, cats had always used the tunnels to escape from predators but with how neglected the tunnels have become, no cat thought it safe to venture in. Privetblaze can't help but notice how the freshkill pile is much smaller than it should be (winter has just ended and the weather is getting warmer) and how much thinner his clanmates are coming out of winter.
After Privetblaze voices his concerns regarding the state of the clan, Heatherstar asserts that the clan will begin thrive now that the warmer weather has returned and the clan's former tunnelers are much better suited in their new roles. All the gathered warriors regard her with disdain.
Shrewclaw, all but trembling with anger, informs her that the blood of their fallen warriors is on her paws. Had they been able to retreat into the tunnels, they may have still been alive!
Reedfeather snarls at Shrewclaw, telling him to show more respect for his leader to which Shrewclaw snarls back that perhaps their clan leader should earn it.
Privetblaze is in shock; it looks like one of best friends and his deputy are about to pounce at each other. Magpiepelt has retreated to the nursery, taking her kittens away from the conflict.
What horrifies Privetblaze most is how Heatherstar isn't stopping this. If anything, Reedfeather seems to be waiting for her go ahead. When the warriors of the clan begin to gather around Shrewclaw, Heatherstar lets out a defeated sigh which gets Reedfeather to stand down.
Heatherstar admits that she has been having the same thoughts that Shrewclaw expressed. She wouldn't blame her clan if they overthrew her. She is open to the idea of bringing back tunneling. She only asks that they finish dealing with the issue of the dog first to which the clan reluctantly agrees.
Privetblaze and Shrewclaw were part of the patrol to chase off the dog. The patrol itself was large, having nearly ten cats. Everything was going well at first; the was to use a bait and switch tactic to drive the dog into the gorge, like what Thunderclan did for the dog pack.
Privetblaze volunteered to be the last one in line, Shrewclaw being second to last.
The plan works until the very end. When Shrewclaw goes to veer away, with Privetblaze making himself seem like a slower target, the dog stays on Shrewclaw.
The dog gets its teeth on Shrewclaw’s leg. Shrewclaw turned in its grip to claw at its muzzle and eyes while Privetblaze attacked its haunches.
Having had enough of Shrewclaw, the dog turned on Privetblaze who ran for the gorge. The rest of the plan went as it was supposed to. The rest of the patrol had begun to take Shreclaw home.
Shrewclaw makes it through the day but soon catches an infection that, after several days of fighting, takes his life.
Privetblaze is accepted into the clan. Orchidshadow, Shrewclaw’s mate, is pampered during her pregnancy. Tunneling is reinstated with a new set of rules to promote safety. A new system is also put in place to decide what each apprentice will be trained in. Heatherstar is allowed to continue her rule under the compromise that she appoints someone who is more loyal to the clan than they are to her for deputy.
In the end she decides on Privetblaze, citing how she believes him to be a leader at heart and how whoever she chooses has to be be leader material, not just deputy material. The clan is outraged; she chooses the cat who had left during the cold moons to be her deputy?! However, Privetblaze is able to convince them that he will do everything he can to serve them. He even volunteers to help get the tunnels up and going again.
No one needed to argue for Deadfoot to become a warrior. He was the last cat Sleettail mentored before retiring to the elder’s den and was the first in a new generation of tunnelers.
Privetblaze continues to see Jake almost every day.
Heatherstar and Reedfeather, in their older age, are concerned about their legacies. Heatherstar does not want her legacy to be the unnecessary deaths of three cats due to the abolishment of a large part of Windclan's culture. Reedfeather doesn't want his legacy to be a failed deputyship and two halfclan cats in Riverclan. To have some sort of positive legacy, they agree to have a litter. Their kits are Pearfoot and Burdockwatcher.
