Elliot Jay Harris was long forgotten before he was born. His mother was never there mentally— she was a drug addict. His father was dead beat and never around either. Elliot had grown fond of the familiar scents of marijuana by the time he was four; it meant Mommy wasn’t leaving for the night.
It was the men that always made him nervous, and angry. Elijah— Elliot’s twin— was a rule follower, never stepping out of bounds. Surprisingly, it was Elliot who broke the rules. He would sneak up food, steal fruit from the trees down the road. It was surprising that no person stopped the four year old to ask where he got the burns on his skin. Where the bruises that were deep in hue and some so bad they stuck around to the current day, pigments of his skin darker than most places.
When he stole shoes from the people down the street, the Men threw the small boy against the wall, threatening him. Elliot had been going to school, pretending to hide in the bathroom during the day. Elijah pick-pocketed one of the Men for their cellphone and dialed the 3 numbers Elliot taught him.
The police came that day. Elliot will never forget the way his mother didn’t put up a fight the way he did. He wanted her to come back for him; but, he knew better. After being rushed to the hospital for stitches and the first of many broken bones, Elliot didn’t find a home till he was 7. Being shipped from house to house made it nearly impossible to keep quiet. He was actually very loud and angry, unable to describe the pain he felt.
Then, Elliot finally found some place he might be able to call a home with the Neil’s.
That was, until Emma arrived. Emma was his babysitter, one who whispered things like, “Good boy.” in his ear. Her hands always hurt, despite her pleas of telling him to smile. It was their secret. After four years of the abuse, Elliot was eleven. The Neil’s sent him off once he became problematic. He wasn’t sleeping through the night. He screamed and cried. His stutter had become worse.
Then, the miracle happened. The Wilde family heard of him, and took him in. It was difficult at first. Elliot stole food. He screamed in the night, unable to fall asleep and never wanted to leave the bathroom when he got scared. The anger had vanished from his body, and instead he was frightened of nearly everyone. Elliot went to therapy for years, but never told anyone about Emma. He slowly came out of his shell. After being in the family for five years, Elliot was adopted. Sixteen and his name legally changed to Wilde.
It was one of the happiest days of Elliot’s tragic life. Another thing that made him happy was cooking. He often helped his father cook, learning tools of the trade. While he could sing, it was often used in the shower. Elliot was a natural when it came to cooking, especially on the grill.
His school suffered when he was younger, due to the fact he didn’t really begin a true education till he was seven. He worked hard at it, stubborn in his ways, and graduated six months early. Elliot used these six months to work at the restaurant with his father as a sous chef. While he was working there, he also worked on a book intertwined with his story.
No one knows about that though.
Now a freshman at PSU, Elliot knows he needs to pick a major. However, he knows that cooking is his passion, but also wants to get his general education out of the way. Another thing he wants to pursue is psychology, in hopes of understanding his anxiety and depression more. Elliot wants to help those around him from their suffering.
He needs to help himself first, however. And he knows that one day, he’ll have to come clean about Emma. But that day is not today.
BABY, THERE'S NO OTHER SUPERSTAR
Elliot wears flannels and jeans, or t-shirts and jeans. His hair is styled in a messy sort of way. He dons shaky hands and a stutter most of the time. Elliot has a quip of a smile on his face, and tries to help those who need it. His body is covered in scars, from cigarette burns (the most common one), to cuts and discoloration on his skin. Often times, he has cash on him to give to homeless people. Elliot doesn’t have any tattoos or piercings. He’s been thinking of getting a tattoo over his forearm, where the brunt of the scars are.
