“Mateo?” You croaked, rubbing the sleep from your eyes. Glancing at the time, you read that it was 2:48 in the morning.
“Y/n, baby, I’m so sorry for waking you up,” he started, honestly regretting calling you at all, “but my roommates have been having a ‘jam sesh’ all night and I just worked a 24 hour.”
You sat up in bed slowly, still not having come out of the fog completely just yet. “Did you ask them to keep it down?”
“Yeah.. it’s not happening. They want me to play bongos. Could I please crash with you tonight?”
“Oh,” you paused to listen as Mateo took a deep breath, “of course you can.”
He sighed in relief, thanking you and telling you he was on his way. You hung the phone up, getting out of bed to wait for his arrival.

Not long after your phone call with Mateo, you heard a quiet knock on the door of your apartment before a set of keys started to jingle. The door opened quietly, you assumed he thought you'd gone back to sleep and didn't want to disturb you again. You raised from your spot on the couch to lead the exhausted firefighter inside your apartment. He shuffled inside quickly, letting you slide his jacket off of his arms.
“I’m sorry for keeping you up so late.” He exhaled, finally feeling some of the tension in his shoulders release.
“Don’t even worry about it. ” You moved to head into the other room, but Mateo reached to stop you. He spun you back around, pulling you flush against him. “Thank you.” He mumbled out. Mateo gradually grew heavier against you, letting you know that he really needed that sleep.
“Come on,” you guided him away from the front door, towards the bedroom. He dragged his feet, squeezing your hands.
“Do you want me to sleep on the couch?” He asked respectfully.
“No, Mateo. You just worked a 24 hours shift. You need to sleep in a bed.”
You led him into your room, watching as he flopped into your bed. He rolled over, covering himself with the blanket as you turned to walk away.
“You're not sleeping on the couch, right?” He sat up, now slightly more awake. You laughed at his worried face, he seemed so tired.
“Relax, I’m just going to the bathroom.” You guided him back down, letting him close his eyes.
“Oh, I was worried.” Mateo sighed, reaching in your direction.
You laughed, allowing him to have your hand for a few moments.
“You’re the best..” His grip on your hand loosened, and you let him go.
When you came back into your bedroom, Mateo was knocked out. He was laying exactly where you’d left him, exactly how you’d left him. With a quiet chuckle, you shut the light off and crawled into your bed.
Through his exhaustion, Mateo shifted towards you. He’d thrown an arm around your waist, carefully tugging you closer. Mateo’s face buried itself into your neck, and he let himself succumb to sleep’s call.
You leaned into him, interlacing your fingers with a set of his, and finally letting yourself fall back asleep.
