Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about how a person improves their skills and what prompts the person to recognize that they need to improve their skills. Sometimes the recognition comes about because you discover a gap in your knowledge that needs to be addressed and the only way it can be addressed is by learning new skills. Sometimes you know a skill but you discover how you can improve on that skill and decide to take that opportunity.

I’ve been developing a new process for internal work. It came about because I realized the skills I had in that area weren’t helping me enough. I needed to take those skills further so I fused some of them together to develop a process that allowed me to go deeper into something I needed to work through and that work in turn helped me discover the need for some additional skills or at least awareness that I was lacking in and needed to realize.

A simple axiom to consider: If you can't define what you want (and don't want), then you can't manifest a result that gets you your desire. A poorly defined, vague result isn't something that can be achieved, because it has no substance, no form, and thus no path to reality.

My newest book is now available!

My newest book, The Process of Magic: A Guide to How Magic Works is now available.

The Process of Magic was originally a class I taught I took the 26 lessons, plus some bonus material and converted it into a book. In The Process of Magic, we explore how magic works and what you can do to improve your magical workings as a result. I also show you how to troubleshoot existing magical workings. The goal of the book is to help you create a stable foundation for your magical practice. I was recently asked what I actually teach in the Process of Magic class. My answer: I teach how magic works and how to get consistent results, without all the esoteric jargon and baggage. But beyond that what I really teach is how to apply systems and processes to magic. And I know that doesn't sound very magical, but for me magic has never really been about the glitter, glamour and bling that shows up in so much of magical instruction. To me that's all window dressings. If I really look at my own work with magic...its about finding the future and bringing it here and now. And I think systems and processes are one of the ways you do that. When you can learn to take anything apart and put it back together again with your own spin, you've got a way of understanding magic that is distinctly different from just about anything else out there. You're no longer in the box. You're outside of it. The current book project I'm working on is a "grimoire" of sorts about how to communicate and connect with the life in your body. It's taking and applying magical techniques for the purpose of changing your relationship with your body and the life within your body. That's really what I'm about...going in new directions and you can't easily go in those directions if you don't have the right systems and processes in place. So that's what I teach when it comes to magic. If you're looking for a more traditional perspective, you'll never find it with me, but if you want the future of magic, if you want to see what magic could be, that's what I'm about.

The other day an acquaintance emailed me and asked me what I thought about sigils. What the person wanted to know is if I thought chaos magic style sigils were an effective form of magic. I’ll admit to being surprised by the question, because I’ve generally found the work, but then I read a bit further and I recognized why sigils hadn’t worked for the person. The person explained that the sigils didn’t look magical.The issue was an aesthetic one. And it’s an important issue actually, because if you look at the practice of magic in general there is an Aesthetic aspect to it that shows up across various systems and traditions, and yet isn’t overtly acknowledged or recognized for the most part. I got to talking with my friend Felix Warren about it, because in the past he’s shared his own perspective about the aesthetic of magic and how he uses an aesthetic perspective in developing his magical work and he agreed that if there is an aesthetic quality missing in a magical working that can affect the person’s process of magic. Hey folks, I'm really excited to share with you that I've relaunched my class Process of Magic: http://grow.eccentricentrepreneurs.com/processofmagic/ And I've made a couple significant changes in the class, since I last offered it. You see, I always believing in improving on what you do, in magic, and in other areas of life and while I've always been pleased with the Process of Magic class, I also felt like there was something missing, something that needed to be added, so instead of doing my usual launch in December I held off, and really examined what I could change. In my latest article I take on the dubious statement to just do magic and show why that advice creates poor results.

One of the attitudes about magic that I always find problematic and frankly disappointing is the attitude that you don’t need to know how magic works.

It reflects a lack of curiosity about magic and how magic interfaces with the world. It also creates another problem, which is something the just do magic crowd doesn’t recognize: A lot of needless complexity occurs when you don’t get curious and peek under the hood.

Why is this bad advice to just do magic so popular?

It’s popular because it encourages magicians to be lazy.

If I just do magic, without understanding what’s happening, its one more thing done.

It sacrifices understanding magic and being curious for the sake of expediency.

The problem is that it also leads to poor results.

Just doing magic, without understanding what you are doing, creates open loops.

It also creates the needless complexity, because a lot of the time we are doing activities that we don’t understand.

This lack of understanding creates a lack of alignment with what’s being done, what’s happening internally for the magician, and how all of that is interfacing with reality to create the result, or lack thereof that the magician experiences.

Recently I wrapped up a month long Saturn work that I had started at Samhain, with the new moon. I do Saturn work whenever I need to do magic around boundaries, limitations and opening doors and what I’ve found is that while the energy is powerful, there’s also something to be said for working with it in small doses. It can be tempting to stay in a specific container/magical working, but if you never close the loop, you aren’t doing yourself any favors, because you aren’t releasing the magic and allowing it to go out into the world so it can do what it needs to do.

When I wrapped up the Saturn working, there was a palpable tension in the air. For a month I had been working with Saturnian energy each day and during that month I didn’t feel that tension in an overt way, and yet nonetheless that tension was there, steadily being built up as I continued to cultivate it and worked through the realizations that the Saturnian current was bringing to me.
