GLO vs Akia is now in production!
Recently I wrapped the storyboards up and now things are kicking into high gear with rough animations, clean lineart, backgrounds and whatnot.
This is also a first for me as I’ve rarely taken the opportunity to be this open about the process of making an animation from start to finish but I’m hoping by updating this blog and posting the backlog of drawings I’ve done with great friends I get to fill this with a great history that’s both as entertaining as informative. Currently I work a job that leaves me free on the weekends so I’m relying on the old diary writings as I continue to keep working on this shot by shot but I’m hoping that you look forward to how it goes, more details later.
Can’t wait to see y’all in the next post!
VIDEO DISCUSSION: Porky's Party Final vs Storyboard Drawings [Side by Side Comparison]
my newest video showcases the removal of Gabby Goat and Petunia Pig in the 1938 cartoon "Porky's Party". the idea for this video stems back to about or exactly a year ago when i was producing a finished-but-scrapped video titled something along the lines of "Every Time Gabby Goat appeared in LT Media". when making that video i found out that he was slated to have another golden age appearance with surviving storyboard drawings, so i lazily downloaded all the images [including deleted scenes] and put them while looping a section of "Gee But You're Swell" for the regular paced moments and "Black Coffee" for the chase -- quicker paced -- scenes, both from "Porky and Gabby". i'd always wanted to return to the idea of that at least but i had no idea how, until it just came upon me "why don't i just make a side by side?", an' so i did.
now to talk about the main meat and potatoes of the video! as i stated before, the video mainly focuses on Gabby and Petunia rather than the whole cartoon. the reasons for this are obvious to some, but i'll still spell them out here. the first and main reason i did not do the full cartoon was for fear of Warner Bros. taking the video down, since it would be copyright infringement. this reason has been stated in the description. the second reason is just, well, i really have a soft spot for Gabby! sure he's irritable, loudmouthed and rude, and pretty much just a Donald Duck clone, but that's what i love about him! and also i like goats. Petunia is also another personal favorite character of mine, it's her [and Porky and Daffy's too, my favorite duo they are!] movie that got me REALLY into Looney Tunes, and she had a lot of potential that I hope to see explored better in the future.
the technical details are something i'd like to discuss as well, i've credited sources in the description including the account @artoflooneytunes [i hope tagging you is not an issue! if it is i severely apologize], which i REALLY recommend you check out some of the stuff on that page if you're into production material as much as i am.
the song used is "Something Tells Me" performed by Victor Silvester and His Orchestra. a personal favorite song of mine! in terms of Carl W. Stalling, it was first used in "Porky & Daffy" and later in "A-Lad-In Bagdad" and finally in "The Daffy Doc". i chose the song as a second option, i was originally to use "Shanghai Shuffle" with the final gong sound to sync up with the penguin being hit by the goose with a mallet. issues with this song arose as i extended the time to have some more scenes included for comparison, and eventually it became too much so i searched out a new option. i was inspired to use a song related to LT from Derek S.'s Bob Clampett animation reel, and the first song that came to mind was "Something Tells Me". the recording i used fits perfectly too!
well, that's just all about i've got to ramble about today. why don't you give the video a watch now? i think you should at least be compensated for listening to me ramble for even a minute. and also happy late birthday to Clampett! i didn't wanna release this video yesterday even though i knew it was his birthday.
if you wish to suggest a video idea, be it like this one or not, feel free to send me it! alrighty, that's all. c-ya next time!
I'm currently losing it over majel barrett's script to journey to babel, found here.
here's the infamous opening scene! complete with sarek pointedly ignoring spock. I'm not sure what they were trying to communicate with kirk looking at sarek before asking spock if he wants to visit his parents, but it played marvelously awkwardly, so it seems to have worked.
I love this costume note. I noticed it in ths episode and I'm thrilled it was intentional. spock has taken off the dress uniform to indicate that he is done entertaining diplomats today!!
quickly, to bypass the awkwardness of having to explain spock and sarek. it's a lot more obvious in the script how eager she is not to answer that question.
spock is near amanda in the party scene "because it is his duty", and completely ignored by sarek.
mccoy just can't resist needling spock!! and the rest of the scene is marked with (MORE), which I assume means they didn't have the scene written out but they knew they wanted to extend this conversation.
spock saying "I did not cry" wasn't in the episode! there's some slight variations on these lines that hit hard. "I kept praying that you'd cry and be human" is utterly heartbreaking. amanda really could not and still cannot relate to her son. and the bit where spock puts his hand on the door after it closes isn't there, but in the moment before she slaps him, this script has him reaching out to her.
ugh this hurts after having watched the final frontier and knowing mccoy's backstory with his own father
as far aa I can tell, the bit with the giant x over it did not make it into the episode, but they did include a couple of edited lines. sarek's heart stops, and here, mccoy tells spock to shut up. on a lighter note, the direction (APPROPRIATE SOUND EFFECT) is hilarious. I guess you know it when you hear it.
and spock is letting out the classic fanfiction breath-he-didn't-realise-he-was-holding. this episode really has everything.
most of it plays out as we see in the episode, but these small edits are really fun to pay attention to!
