How Can I Become Involved in Video Game Production?
Question by Dante: How Can I Become Involved in Video Game Production? Hello, first off, I would like to say that I have no experience with making video games, no programming knowledge or graphic design savvy. I have always wanted to get involved with making video games, specifically the stories and the mechanics such as combat or puzzle ideas. I have a lot o ideas I would love to see made real but I have hit a snag...I have no idea how to go about doing so. I have looked into colleges and even attended two that said that they would be able to help me on my career path and then gave me courses towards a degree that had nothing to do with the field. I live in a backwater town in Pennsylvania, but I would have no problem moving if I was absolutely certain I could attend a school that could help me achieve at least a modicum of my dreams. If anyone could help me with finding a good school or let me know about something I could do to get directly into the business and learn/go to school at the same time for programming/design...also are there any other courses that I might want to take other than those two? Please help!! =) P.S. I have some ideas that are time sensitive as they are direct sequels to other games on the market or are made in spirit of a particular animated television show that has stopped airing. Is there any way that I could be taken seriously submitting these ideas to a company right away? Or would I have to wait until I was part of the whole system? Best answer:

Well, I'm sorry to disappoint you, but you don't make the game. There are a couple guys who think up the game, and everyone else designs what they want. You have to go to college first I would ask in the Business Section if I were you EDIT: I forgot to add, I'm not too sure if that is a good job.

As far as education goes I would recommend the Media Informatics program at Northern Kentucky University. "Media Informatics brings together skills in writing, audio, interactive Web design, 3d animation and virtual worlds to create a rich life on the screen." The game industry is the main focus of the faculty ( most have been involved in the gaming industry) as well as most of the students although the skills learned can be used in other fields too. MIN 252 Interactive Non-Linear Storytelling focuses on writing the story, and creating a proposal for a game. So to answer, the question about your game ideas you would probably need to be involved with the company that produces such a game and sequels also depend on the popularity and success of the game. Another class is MIN 375 Impact of Computer Games & Virtual Worlds goes over the history of games everything from pong to mobile gaming and current events in the game industry are also talked about. The first link below takes you to the home page for the media informatics program and the second link takes you to the 2013-2014 media informatics checklist showing you all the courses on has to take. If you have further questions about the program you can just email the department.
