I choose to do the Antalis brief to explore how to use paper in many creative ways to inspire other creators to choose this medium. I started with a spidergram to think of different ideas I can do that involves paper. One idea that excelled, was the pop-up book. I explored this idea with inspirational images from the web and designs I can do to show how paper is very important. This involved a four-paged pop-up book of special events that uses paper, that were; giving a love letter, crafting with your loved ones, drawing a special moment and a wedding invitation. However, I scraped this idea, as it would take too long to make; with the mechanics of making a pop-up book were complicated. I found a new idea that led to my final solution, which was a silhouette piece showing my hometown in different seasons. I wanted to make an artwork that would relate to the audience to give them a sense of comfort and security. So, I thought about making my piece with a personal comfort that would make people think about those places, if they meant a lot to them or if they visited these places before. When I look at my piece, it gives me a sense of belonging, as I grow up with these attractions. Therefore, bringing a personal insight to this brief to make it feel more value and portraying it through using paper. I choose to connect these attractions to the seasonal changes also, to convey how these places look in different periods and that the audience can feel like they seen how the North looks during the whole year.
I started making my designs in Photoshop and transfer them into Illustrator to be laser cut. There were countless amounts of difficulties during this process that included the type of paper being used and the printers not working. However, I gained a lot of insight of how graphic designers do their work and the many types of paper. I enjoyed this process very well, as I do like making physical work that people can observe and touch. Overall, this process went successfully with making a solution that would inspire the audience to use paper once again, as it gives a personal touch to the physical piece that people can observe and feel a connection to. I wanted my piece to inspire people to craft similar places that reflect their homes that can be used as letters to loved ones, who live far away to remind them of their homes. This could be good ornaments that they can make easily using paper to have around the house to convey their sense of belonging to their homes. Therefore, influencing people to make meaningful pieces that reflect their home to be kept or given and that can be crafted by any age group using paper.
